why does steam come out of sewers

today on my way to the hospital to see my dad I noticed some of the sidewalks had pipes with insulation on them shooting out steam. Alot of manhole covers were also steaming what causes this. Akron doesn;t ghave a steam plant.

It's from Michaelangello, Donatello, Rifiell and leanardo/spelling.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I loved that show and it still comes on, seen it the other day. [Big Grin]

It's just fog off of the water because the watet is warmer than the air.

There's steam coming out everywhere in NYC. I don't know what it's from, but it feels nice and warm on a cold day. I don't care if its steamy pee, it doesn't smell like it. I think it's just warm air from pipes and sewers underground. The air has to get out somehow.

    LMAO! Me TOO!

It is pretty simple... Why does it only do it downtown, somebody asked? There are a lot more people downtown which creates more waste which results in it being warmer, correct? [Toothless]

Ok I am gonne try not to get into too much detail here , but basically the ummm "stuff" is decompoing , rotting , whatever you want to call it , and it generates heat , if you do not beleive me , go see a farmer some day int the middle of winter and dig into the pile of "stuff" i guarantee it will not be frozen , it's the same with silage , if you take a bunch of it and expose it to air for a few days (or longer) and it will heat up , i have seen bales of silage catch fire because they got so hot , I have seen bales of hay that got rained on catch fire in the field .

it's really easy to figure out it does it for the same reason as your breath on a cold day, the air is warmer inside the sewer, not because of piles of human waste just sitting in the sewer
