Ummm can you be anymore detailed?  If I were to assume, I would guess its a GM truck with the G80 limited slip rear end.  These have a pin in them that is "common" for failure, the limited slip unit is basically a grenade on an abused rear axle that is too small for a 1/2 ton truck.

gotta love the G80's and how half the parts I dumped out of my blown one look like they came out of a broken childs toy.  well mine lasted 120K miles, about 30K of that consisted of a lot of powersliding and burnouts.

Got a Detroit Tru Trac installed with new 3.73's and bearings for $950ish.  paid the guy $100 in labor so I got a fairly good deal and I like the Detroit.

UMMMM A NEW DIFFERENTIAL IS NOT $2500!!!  Someone took you to the cleaners buddy.  FYI junkyards sale complete rear ends for less than 500 with the G80.  I purchased one myself for rcsb 1500 awhile back when I was fixing it up.  I bought my complete rear end from a junk yard, built the guys how I wanted (4.10, tru trac, etc.) and then just swapped complete axle.

yea but when buying from a junkyard you usually dont know how many miles or what kinda miles are on it and how its life could be 90% used up like your old one.  I debated over building my current 10bolt, going to the junkyard and taking a chance or doing a 12bolt swap which was way outta my league.

Maybe you missed what I said... "Built it how I wanted"  And besides the great thing about buying a used axle is you CAN open it up by 10 little easy bolts to truly check its full condition unlike just about ANY other part for a vehicle.

And anyways I was just saying how I did it, tried and proven, put more power through it than you ever will, and let the guy know he missed a chance at a much cheaper avenue.

But Hudge the way to try and eliminate this for future reference with the factory limited slip is NO MORE TURNS AND GASSING IT TO LIGHT UP THE TIRES.  This is the cause of that pin shifting (or however you want to describe the failure) getting the clutches and causing a grenaded action/failure.  The limited slip can hold up reasonably well actually to burnouts going straight.  Although it WILL unlock once the tires are spinning at approximately 20 mph.  If you have any other questions feel free to ask.  I will help the best I can.

This was very common back in SBC and carb engine build days.  But in today's world it is almost unherd of.  Yes it puts more stress on items in the differential.  And with the products on the market it is one of the least effective ways.

man they got me workin 65 hours a week im sure i paid a little for the quick turn around factor but the truck is paid off and has been for a while meaning no payment.  i have 0 time right now to have the truck down it blew up at 530 in the mornin was towed to the shop by 9 and im drivin it right now i didnt want to pay that much believe me that set me back an entire semester of night school that i had saved up but my truck is my lively hood right now. i had to weigh my options tough choice but i still feel it was necessary.  i wish it got a little better mileage any pointers on that?

Hey we all have to make those decisions.  Glad they got you back on the road.

MPG increase pointers...
Clean air filter
Clean fuel filter
correct tire pressure
Looking for a live tuner to tune your truck to the way you want will give you optimal mpg
mufflers make very very small if any increases

Those are the main cheap things.  If you are looking to invest some money into the truck to increase the mileage you can look at bed covers, gears, electric fans, etc.
