The way I understood was they were only giving out helpers books for now.  No welders or fitters.  Thats been a couple yrs ago, so maybe things have changed since?  And I almost joined the Boilermaker/Journeymans union, but I got was more work being non union honestly.

From what my best friend and several others have told me, unless you get in good with someone in the union, you will ride the bench a lot. He was in 2 different unions and he spent more time on the bench than he did working. I worked under a union permit before, but when the job was done, I didn't join the union for that reason. If I am going to pay dues to work, I want to stay busy all year, not just a few months.

I had a helpers book out of 798 and I stayed working easily 11 months a year. If you do get a helpers book just busy u r but t and you will work alot. It takes good work ethic and alot of hard work to get in good with the crews that work all the time but it is very doable. IMO

You can always get your book and try it.  If its not for you, do something else, but dont get rid of your book.  You can always have it for a backup if times get hard

If ya do get a book and let it go - ya can always get it back - just gotta get caught up on you're back dues. However when I quit pipelining I knew I most likely wouldn't go back to traveling. Also I met alot of good ppl while working the trade. I have had ppl stop to help me if I was broke down or had a flat ONLY cause they were Union Brothers and saw my 798 license plate or 798 stickers on my camper / truck. It is kinda hard to explain - most everybody will bend over backwards to help ya.

TOOLOUD just curious, why did you get out of the 798? just got tired of all the traveling? I know several guys in there and they really are some stand up guys, and have some sharp rigs.

Dustin right now is a good time for you to start a construction trade and see how you like it. IMO it's a young/single mans job. I worked the road , as a millwright, ironworker, and pipefitter, for about 10 years before I gave it up. It's hard to stay away from your wife and kid for months at a time. But you will meet a lot of people from all over the place, get to see the US, and pocket a good chunk of change.

Punkinhead - you nailed it - got tired of traveling and it is a single / young mans game. If I could pipeline in my back yard and have as much fun as I did while I was traveling then I would do it till I died ! Truly a great brotherhood to be a part of.

I never had the urge to break out and weld on pipelines mainly cause there were soo many welders all fighting for a certain number of spots. Where as a good helper will work as much as you want.

It is a different world out there. If I were young and single I wouldn't hesitate to go work pipeline construction. I stayed unemployed for over 6 months back in 2002 but I was drawing good unemployment money so I just played / hunted Everyday.

You'll have to get a laborer book I got mine out of Louisiana operators books are on international lockdown and you could maybe go into 798 (welder/helper) if you know somebody that's in it

Best way to get in is to find a company doing a short -6 month -100 mile line in a low paying state, that's how I got in .. I live in bama and my first pipeline job was in arizona
