update on $30 nitrous setup, RESULTS!!

Here are the specifics of my nitrous setup. 
 
I have a bicycle/ATV CO2 tire inflator, a needle for inflating basket balls/foot balls/soccer balls, some misc hose, and some 16 gram nitrous cartridges. 
 
 
I zip tied the tire inflator on to my handle bars on the left hand side so I can easily hit the trigger while keeping both hands on the handle bars.  I screwed the needle into the end of the inflator.  From that needle, I used a very small hose adaptor and then ran some 5/16" hose from there to my snorkel. 
 
 
I then tested it this weekend at Mud Nationals. 
 
 
Now, my quad is only a 250 cc motor, but I currently am running a 140 jet in it and had a set of 25 X 9 X 12 Super Swamper Vampires on the back. 
 
When running in thick mud, the quad would occasionally start to bog down in 1st gear, so I reached up and tapped the nitrous for a split second.  I was suprised that instantly, the rpms rose and I was able to continue spinning the tires through the rest of the mud hole.  I also found while running on tight trails in 2nd gear, if I came across some mud and started to bog down, I could tap it again and it would give just enough of a power increase to maintain enough rpms to use 2nd gear. 
 
Each 16 gram cartridge was good for about 7-10 "taps".  I went through 3 cartridges the entire weekend, but one cartridge was just trying to get everything working right, one cartridge was used to see how long it would last with keeping it pinned, and the other cartridge was used for normal trail riding.  So in reality, one cartridge lasted an entire weekend.
 
If I had to guess how big this "shot" is, I would have to say it's around a 2-3 hp shot. 
 
 
The CO2 inflator ran me $20
 
A 5 pack of 16 gram nitrous cartridges ran me $10
 
I had all the hoses and fittings laying around the house.

Since this is just nitrous that is being injected, it won't hurt the carb at all.  I picked up the inflator at a local bicycle shop for $20 (you can probably find them cheaper).  I then ordered a 5 pack of 16 gram nitrous cartridges from www.bestwhip.com for $10 after shipping. 
 
I'd like to see if 8 gram cartridges work because I can buy a case of them locally for $15.  They wouldn't last as long, but it would be even cheaper.

One thing for you guys to kee in mind, I tested this out on a 250 cc motor.  Bigger motors will not see as big of a gain in power. 
 
Although, I am using a restrictor of sorts.  I imagine if I were to remove the restrictor it would do just as good on a larger motor.

Ok, due to popular request, here is a picture showing the break down of how I assembled the nitrous setup.
 

 
 
In order from bottom left, circulating around clockwise...........
 
bottom of inflator
nitrous cartridge
top of inflator
football/basketball/soccer ball inflator needle
hose adaptor (found at any autoparts store)
2' of 3/16" hose with a loop on the end, held in place with a zip tie
 
 
The nitrous cartridge goes inside the bottom of the inflator, then you screw the top of the inflator in to the bottom of the inflator.  There is a small pin that punctures the top of the nitrous cartridge when it is screwed in far enough.  The needle is screwed into the top of the inflator where you would typically screw the tire valve stem on to.  The plastic hose adaptor then pushes very snuggly over the needle.  On the other side of the needle, the 3/16" hose gets pushed on to it.
 
Now, you can run any size hose you want.  With a smaller size hose though, the nitrous will travel quicker through it thus giving you less of a lag time.  Speaking of lag time, as soon as I hit the nitrous on this setup I would start counting out loud.  I couldn't even get the full number one out of my mouth by the tim it would hit.  This is with the nitrous going through 2' of hose, then going through a 4' long 1 1/2" snorkel!!!  I would guess it has about a 1/2 second delay to it.

You need to connect a hose tot eh inflator in some way.  If you don't, then there's going to be leaks in the system and it won't perform very good, if at all. 
 
You are right, I used the needle as a regulator of sorts.  With a larger orifice, you will get more flow, but it won't last as long. 
 
No, WalMart does not carry them.  They carry CO2 catridges but not nitrous cartridges.  You can buy the nitrous cartridges online (just do a search for "whip cream chargers"or go to www.bestwhip.com for the 16 gram cartridges) or you can find a local "smoke" shop (often refered to as a "head" shop) and buy 8 gram cartridges.
 
About 95% of all the nitrous cartridges out there are 8 gram ones.  The only place that I have found the 16 gram ones at is at the link above.  I do not know yet if the 8 gram cartridges will work in the typical inflator or not.  I will probably find out in a week or two.

be careful with the NOS.....when your running it your mixture of fuel and air will be real lean on fuel and may damage your piston. Keep a spare spark plug handy too.

1.  I always keep a spare spark plug with me just in case as well as all the tools to change it.
 
2.  I run 93 octane gas minimum when I do this.  Otherwise, 87 octane is fine.
 
3.  I don't continously spray, I only used it in very short bursts to keep the tires spinning in thick mud.
 
4.  I ran a VERY small shot of roughly 1 1/2 to 2 hp shot.

I think as long as you only use it for short periods of time you wont hurt anything, at least that is what I am hoping!

nitrous works good. we had to spray it directly in the air box to notice. one tap raised the rpms by about 600.

That's good to hear!  Just make sure you're running high octane gas and/or jet it up a bit extra to make sure you don't run too lean and blow the motor.

just sitting back killing time and i ran upon this thread. man you have good idea there. i wanted nos but just a small amount. you hit the nail on hte head with this one.[sm=143.gif]. i dont know when its gunna be but when i do it ill post pics in my sig. im gunna try and refine it a bit though, no offence but ide like for it to look good to. maybe get a cool little colorful sock out of my 1 year olds sock drawer, and maybe a crome or stainless. clamps to hold it down on the front rack or something.

I wouldn't do a dry shot unless it was one of these little hand held ones that I did.  Even if you put the smalest nitrous jet in it, I bet it sprays more than these little buggers do.

You could fill the jet in with epoxy and drill a very small hole through it.  Then you could have the small dry shot with a large bottle.

Go to an AG sprayer supply store and buy a stainless steel orifice and holder.
They come in lots of differert sizes and the hole wont get bigger on you like a hole drilled in epoxy would over time.

Just a warning guys,

This is NITROUS.  It burns hot and fast.  This is great for budget builders!!  But do not try to build your own nitrous kit!  You will simply blow/harm the motor.  There is a reason why people sell these kits, they are reliable, these are not.  These crude (yet amazingly cool) nitrous blowers can still be enough to blow a motor.

Make sure you understand the facts, tips, and things tto change before runing it.  (Upping the jet, colder plud, remove any timing advancement devices.)

I know very little about nitrous, but hoepfully i might save a motor or two from going boom from someone building their own kit! 

This application will not work (very well or long that is) in a larger "shot" or setting!!

Your general nitrous will burn hotter(more air + fuel is like a bigger explosion so its hotter) and raise the compression of a motor(Higher octane so it doesn't pre-detonate).

The difference here is its a small shot for a small amount of time even if the shot leans it it won't have enough time to heat up and cause damage and shouldn't raise the compression but it wouldn't hurt to run a higher octane because pre-detonation will really take its toll on an engine.

Nitrous does not increase compression. It makes a more violent reaction increasing the amount of force the combustion process places on the cylinder.

Compression is a mechanical function based on mechanical functions of the piston against the combustion chamber.

Nitrous is more densly populated with oxygen atoms than atmospheric air therefore it allows for a more efficient and thorough combustion process.

You run need to run a richer jet to keep a lean mixture scenario under control which can lead to super high temps that burn sharp edges on combustion chamber parts.

You run higher octane to keep detonation at bay which can prematurely ignite the incoming air/fuel charge and damage internal engine parts as well at blow off air boxes and carbs.

Nitrous does NOT increase compression. It causes a more violent, and thus more powerful combustion, but it does not change compression.

Let me rephrase.

It increases the cylinder pressure on detonation and with an increased cylinder pressure it is more likley to pre-detonate.

Essentially, yes.  However, you don't have to run the hose all the way to your air box.  I only had about 3" of hose going into my snorkel and it worked just fine. 
 
 
 
Well, that one on Ebay sold, but not what I was wanting to get out of it.  I have 2 more of these kits that I will sell for $35 to anyone here that wants them, shipping not included.

NOT AT ALL!!  If you were to spray CO2 instead of nitrous, the quad will bog and it will possibly kill the motor due to a lack of oxygen.  Basicly, you can do it, but everytime you hit the nozzle, you will loose power.  CO2 will not help the combustion process out at all like nitrous does.

Dont you think that if you ran the hose (with proper fittings and seals) into the carb boot between the airbox and carb you would have better results?
