hey guys, i was just sitting here at work day dreaming, oops, and for whatever reason Honda's Trx 200 Type II popped into my head!?!? What was that 4wheeler???? Was honda for real? I realize they made this thing years ago, but lets try to go back into time and remember it. I'm sure Honda is trying to forget. Does anyone on here have any info on it? Or better yet, seat time? Does anyone actually still have one??? I still remember going to the Honda dealership years ago and seeing the beloved 300 Trx, and the HUGE (at the time) 400 foreman. And there sat the 200 type II as well. Well, i didn't get an atv at that time, but had i, i hope it wouldn't have been the 200. Any comments regarding this "unique species" would be great....just thought i would add some discussion. [:D]

p.s. I do remember it being called the "trunkmoblie" in ATV action back in the day. Supposedly, it had a huge storage compartment. oh yeah,  here is the real question, "what was the type I??????"

Here's a pic of the Type II.  Not the best looking machine I must say...

My first ATV was a 95' Type II.  Aside from it being chain drive, and 2wd, it was as tough as anything else Honda has made.  We drove the wheels off the that bike, and the chain was the only complaint I ever had.

The type II is a new one on me.  Not the sleekest ride ever designed!  Did someone say they had a 1995 one?  Atv design is moving pretty fast.
I did have a 200sx for about 10 years, cut my teeth on it and it served me well.  Here's what they look like.

To the best of my memory, the 200 type 1 was basically a front and rear rack machine like the 300 and 400.  The only difference between the 200 and 200 type 2 was the trunk.

I wish I could find one now. Even if it needed some work.  I would love to have one for my daughter.

my buddy first wheeler was the type 2!!! we rode the wheels off that thing when we where younger! The only problem we ever had was that stupid chain. He actually only sold that thing  a week ago. and hes 22!(not that we have rode it in the last 7 years but for anything more than laughs)Sold it to a guy who is gonna let his son ride it. I belive hes parents had bought it bran new for him in 95. so in 10 years the only problem ever was the chain, not a bad buy considering how rough we where on this thing.
and btw the trunk on that little thing was massive for compared to the size of the bike.

honda made two types of typeII one with the large buble trunk and one without. my friend had one when it first came out. it was a strong bike for what it was. the only problem was it had only 4 gears. he also had a lot of problems with the chain and rear bearings

Too clear this up, there were only 2 types. One was simply called a 200 and the other, a 200 type II. the 200 had no trunk and the type II had a trunk.

I still have my 1995 trx200 type 2 that thing is awesome. Is overpowered for a 200 it beats my friends recon in a race very good steering i love the trunk but the rubber buttons that hold it down rip to easy and honda does not make them anymore. The only thing i dont like about the 200 is that thing is so rough riding compared to my 500 sportsman and 800 sportsman. Actually the HONDA TRX 200 TYPE 2 has 5 gears not 4 and that is a 1995. Overall i love my 200 even though it is a honda it was my first atv and i still love it to death will never sell it. [:D][:D][:D]

Yeah, I just sold my 200 type II on wednesday. It sat up for about 3 years (seriously) after the chain problems and me deciding my a#@ was too big for it. Before I sold it I replaced the rear bearings and put a chain on it and was riding wheelies up the driveway before the fella took it home to his son. That thing was bullet proof other than the chain and the occasional bearings in the rear. After it sat that long I didn't put new gas in it, clean the carb or any thing I just pushed it off and it was runnin like a top!

Bringing and old thread back to the top. I just picked one up for my 10 year old son for 500 bucks. It is the kind with the trunk and it has an aftermarket front rack on it. It is in good shape. Starts and runs well. I bought it from a friend so I know its history. It has been garage kept. It could use better rear brakes and a new chain adjuster.

thats a type 1

i have one of each, i have to say, i loke the type 1 better, er i did(totaled), it felt like it had ALOT more power than the type2, the type 2 is a dog, but its really comfy to ride around the trails on our property, they are grass and dirt with a few small hills and its fun to just relax around on it, the type 1 beats your brains out with the effed up j-arm suspension.

thanks, it was fun while it lasted, it still is kinda rideable, its just reall wobbly. i took the plastic and rack off so nothing is rubbing. the frame is bent, axle bent, j arm bent, rims bent, steering stem twisted, carbeurator float sticks sometimes, sometimes stopps gting spark but leave it alone and five minutes later fires right up lol. put er in low range 1st and i think she would turn some EDL's stock.  thats what i planned on, no mods, just EDL's and a snork.

I want to do some part interchangability checking. I have done a ton of swaps on Honda 300's.  Now I think I would like to see if the rear fender and rack on a type two could be mounted on the trunkmobile. My son isn't too crazy about that big ole trunk. What do you think?

RE: TRX 200 Type II!!!!! 2009/02/14 01:00:15
personally, i love the big trunk on the type2, unless my gf is with me, then we bungee strap a pillow in a trashbag to it for her, its really not big enough or powerful enough for 2 people unless youre just putting around like i do with her. but you can see how clean it is, it was my great uncles before he passed away [&o]  he had alot of good times on it and now im the only one that rides it, we leave it at the "farm", a 200 acre property him and my grandpa own and shared.  the type1 had plenty of power and ran faster than my 300, i never had a problem with 2 people on it with some small hills. it was a little more "roomy" like the 300 is. if i had the choice between a brand new of either i would definately pick the older type1

the type2 is the trunk mobile, if you are talking about putting the type 1 rear on the type 2 anything can be done with some a little bit of fab [;)]  i was going to put 400ex plastic on the type1 before the incident and put 2 small fog lights on the handle bars inplace of the single and hook up the 400 head lights.

OK, that was what I was thinking, you can FAB about anything. LOL!  I put 2000 plastic on an 88 300 one time. the major stuff all worked, had to do a little fab work with the inner fenders and fender stays.

As far as the 200 goes, It looks like maybe I could change from trunk to rear rack by buying a new trunk cover and rack with mounting hardware?  Your pic of the type 1 looks like the big hole is still in the rear fender for storage but has a flat cover instead of bubbled up cover. It also looks like it hinges on just like the other one. Is this true?  You know how kids are, my son kinda thinks the trunk looks goofy and wants to take it off all the time.  He said he wishes it had a rack like mine in the back. [:)]

the type one is like the 300, the battery is under the seat, and the trunk is under the little hinge bar that hurts your butt when ya sit on it lol. i honestly have no idea how close they are to bolting up. i do know if you used type 1 plastic and rack you would need the type1 seat and that would get tricky pretty quick....

Anything I should know about these as far as maintenance.............I mean anything they are famous for theirself? Stuff besides the normal stuff that applies to every machine?  The guy I got it from told me the chain won't stay tight and needs a new tension adjuster. I am gonna play with it this afternoon, but I dont see anything on it broke or bent. I don't see why it would need anything new myself. I suppose you just loosen the 4 bolts and then screw in the 2 adjusting nuts. Maybe he didn't know what he was doing?

I certainly didn't know the type one and type two used diferent seats and stuff, they are more different than I realized. I though the plasic and racks were the ONLY difference.

let me know what you want pics of and i will put them up here for everyone to see the difference

there is a world of difference.

type1 had j-arm front suspension, shaft drive, 5spd down with high/low range trans, single light uptop

type2 had a arms front suspension, chain drive, 5spg up, no low range, dual plastic mounted headlights

you can see the type1 has full length seat, type 2 has short seat that wont allow more than 1 person

type1
had terrible suspension, troubles with CDI and spark, terrible design on carb placement, its a pita to get out to clean

type2
put a new chain on it, check all bushings and bearings in the rear end, also swingarm bearings and bolts, those are the most common problems on them. they dont have low enough gears for anything more than a 24'' stock tire from another bike on the rear, the factory rims bent real easy in my opinion

The type II is basically a 200sx sitting under ugly plastic.  The 200 type I is basically a 250 fourtrax w a dual range tranny.  Like oldtrx says, both have some pitfalls, but the 200sx/200 type II is way more fun to drive IMO.

I am getting more confused with each post. Did the type 2 come with AND without the rear rack? The picture on the first page of this thread, with the rear rack still looks to have the same little bitty seat as mine. I have the trunkmobile with chain drive and 2 little headlights side by side in the middle of the front fender.

OLDTRX anypics you can put up of the rear rack, storage compartment etc is appreciated. I am thinking of ordering the rear rack and storage lids and trying to fab them onto my existing rear fender.

Both have chain drive, two little headlights side by side in the middle of the front fender. The only difference I can find on them is the rear fender...........rack vs. trunk.                  hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Mine is EXACTLY like this one except for the big trunk in place of the rear rack. Honda parts Online microfiche calls this one a 200D and mine a 200. I want to see if I can order the rear rack, and 2 trunk lids............( the online microfiche calls them a rear fender lid and the other is called a sub lid.) and fab them onto my trunkmobile...........thus making it look like this one.

Yep my trunkmobile is EXACTLY the same as this one except for the trunk.

OK, honda just had a 200 and a 200 type 2 in the 90's. I     just saw my cousins Dirt Wheels    magazine from 1994.   It had a review of the 200 and 200 type 2.  It said specifacally that buyers had a choice of a 200 with a trunk or a 200 type 2 that was identical except for the rack in place of the trunk. Dirt Wheels quoted in parenthesees ( Who calls a machine a type 2? YIKES!!!)  The website cmnsl.com also confirms this with pics and labels.   http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-trx200d-fourtrax-type-ii-1997-us_model81/partslist/  and http://www.cmsnl.com/search.php?model_id=79&partsPage=6

I have a 1991 200 just like the picture from oldtrx.  I have had it since new and it is a really tuff bike.  I used to suck the motor full of water a couple times a weekend.  I just carried extra oil for when it got too milky and would change it on the trail.  I still use mine for work around the ranch, it is usually loaded down with fencing tools and feed buckets.  It cranks up perfect and purrs like a kitten.  I have some "custom" parts: JB weld on the crank cas where I knocked a hole in it.  No brakes or brake parts.  Rubber hose wrapped inside the rear spring to keep it from sagging so bad.  Snorkel using pool hose and paint can.  Old school woolybooger tires.  The problem with this bike is the chain drive.  If you ride in mud, you will have chain problems.  Keep it clean and adjusted.  I have a 420 Rancher and Polaris Sportsman both sitting in my shop, but for some reason I jump on my old 200 and ride off across the pasture almost everyday.
