looking for a good mud/trail tire

I'm looking for a good 30" mud/trail tire for my modded 2012 Grizzly 700. the area I ride in has some deep (some are bottomless) mud pits that I really want to play in. however most of the guys I ride with are trail riders so I'm looking to for a tire that will do really well in the mud but still be passable on the trails. these aren't maintained trails so obstacles such as big rocks, large roots, and fallen trees are common.

my budget is $1100 but this needs to cover a set of wheels as well (probably STI HD beadlocks). I would prefer to use a 12" wheel so I still have the option of switching to outlaws in the future (when the budget has more room).

the tire ive been looking at is the Interco black mamba lite but I figured id make this post to give you guys the chance to offer other suggestions.

thanks!

Man it's hard to put a good trail and mud tire in the same sentence. The reason is most mud tires don't do well at high speed. They like to walk on you due to so little surface contact. Where are you riding at? Also just get away from 12" wheels cause for 30" tires 14" wheels will give you better options plus the look. I'm a fan of interco and have been for years. The mambas are a beast and let you know on a scale as well. Why are they heavy? Cause their built like a tank and wear like iron. I think the lite is still a mud tire. As far as a true mud tire outlaws and gorillas lead the pack. Others are creeping up on gorilla but outlaws will be on top for many years to come. I know I have not mentioned all terrain tires cause they won't make you happy in the deep holes your talking about. So come on back and expand on your riding location and conditions. Also thanks for stopping by.

Go to 14 inch wheel for sure.

I’ve always liked the look up the Outback Max’s. Haven’t done much reading on them but they have plenty of lug and a tread design that would be fine on trails.

My ol2s surprise me on trails but then again like my dad says- you’re young, you can wrestle them things around.

Be careful on those fallen trees with big tires!! You’ll kiss your axles goodbye... trust me 🤦🏻‍♂️

    thanks for the replies!

i dont need these tires to be "good" on trails, just "passable". from what ive seen and researched silverbacks and OL1's tend to get damaged and/or wear very quickly on rough trails. its not what they are designed for so its not a fault of the tire. ive been told by a few people with experience that the black mamba lite did very well on the trails. the OL2 does pretty **** well on the trails and ive got plenty of first hand experience riding with a friend who has a RZR 1000 high lifter edition (he loves those tires). sadly none of the high lifter tires fit into my budget... them critters are just too expensive!

another tire ive looked at was the CST sludge hammer. these also seem like a viable option and are very affordably priced. the things that make me nervous about this tire are the couple videos ive seen of them having alot of trouble getting out of holes (they seemed to do fine in the hole) and having trouble in reverse. i also had a chance to ask the youtuber "Mud Puppy" about these tires (hes running 32" Sludge hammers and 30" mamba lites on two rigs at the moment) and his experience was that the mamba lite pulled better in the mud.

i wanted to stay with a 12" wheel so OL1 tires would still be a future option. some day when i can afford them, id like a set of S/W 29.5" OL1's.

    thanks all

I gotcha so a lot of rocky trails? Well if your looking for interco tire go to their website. They have cosmetic blemished tires. For instance I got 4 32" black mambas for $600. Only thing wrong was it said it was 30's on the sidewall. They have no structural defects as they cannot sell those. I have seen 30" mamba lites under 100 bucks a piece. Rep that buzzard well hahaha. I live about 40 minutes from the factory.

I agree with nutt on this if you tea wanna go mambas keep an eye on that blend list Bc they will be dirt cheap as soon as they show up. I have really been looking into the outback max doveman mentioned. They look pretty aggressive with deeper tread than those mambas and they are super flat so I’m betting they still ride pretty decent on trail and hard pack. I have 30 s/w monster mayhem’s right now and they are a pretty decent tire in both conditions but not the best you could find. And I’d do 14” wheels still. If you wanna go outlaw originals In the future just squeeze some 31s under her.

our trails are rough to say the least! every time i took my little 2018 Polaris Ace 570 out to really play i would break something. usually hitting trees, hitting big rocks, or sinking it in mud. the Ace is my go-to hunting and general woods exploration vehicle and i couldnt have it constantly broken. so i bought the 2012 grizzly as a strait up toy to be rough on and break often.

i just looked into those outback max tires and it looks like they are a touch too expensive for me at this time.

thanks for the heads up on the blems! i admit ive never even considered the sniper tire... looks... odd. total cost for me would be around $900 (mounted on wheels). they weigh the same as the black mamba lites but have a tread pattern more like a interforce II. are these things any good???

ive never heard of anyone running 31" tires on a grizzly with just a 2" lift and not having rubbing problems. there is a post about it on grizzlycentral.

    thanks for all the responses!

I know a guy who runs em on a pioneer down here. Not smooth at all lol but those sniper blems are cheap as dirt compared to anything else in that size lol. My buddy had a grizzly around your year and had 32” backs on it with only a 2” lift but I think he had to trim up the fenders some

I have the interforce II's and the sniper is no where near. The interforce II's are basically a super aggressive ag tire that's skinny. The sniper is a good tire that just never hit the market like interco thought. I hear mixed reviews when being compared to outlaws but it's just not that type of tire. I think they would work for you.

did some research on the sniper last night, funny when i first looked at them i thought the flat side of the tread was the forward part of the tire hence comparing it to interforce II's. looks like they are actually meant to be more aggressive vampires which wont work for me. too many of the mud holes in my area either dont have bottoms or the bottom is 5-6 feet down thanks to lifted jeeps and trucks on 37"+ tires.

my hopes are that the black mamba lite wont dig much and pull me threw these pits (dont care if i make it fast, just wanna make it). also kinda hoping that with the aggressive side lugs i could take advantage of the truck/jeep ruts.

course im also thinking about giving up completely on the trails all together and getting a set of silverbacks. i could get a set of 30x10x12 on STI HD1 wheels for $1043 or a set of S/W 30x9x14/30x11x14 on STI HD5/9 wheels for $1093. the downside to doing this is i dont have a group of people who will just play in the mud with me. i would likely have trouble finding company since most of the "mudders" in this state use trucks/jeeps (its due to WA state rules, trucks/jeeps can use a loophole).

Silverbacks ride rough as crap. I’ll never own a set.

Wish you were around NE Texas or NW Louisiana. Can find ol2’s for $500 all the time

If you’re not in a huge hurry I’d put that $1100 in your pocket and add to it a couple hundred dollars and get exactly what you want

I have 29.5 ol2 with 2inch and the back rubbed when loaded on the edge of the fenders. Fixed that problem with my pocket knife.

all of the high lifter tires blow way over my budget and my tires are bald. however i will certainly keep them in mind for a future set of tires.

feck it, ill meet yall half way. im doing black mamba lites on 14" wheels. it will exceed my budget a little ($1159 at motoxmall) but im pretty sure i left $100 wiggle room. the 14" wheel does seem to open up a couple more options for tires to try in the future.

i ordered them as a mounted wheel/tire set from motoxmall for $1159. the wheels are STI HD beadlocks and the order should include a set of hubs and lug nuts.

i checked with 2wheel before i made the order and the total cost of the wheels, lug nuts, and tires was $1065 (after my $30 points were used). my local shop (which is the least expensive around) charges $80 to mount a set of tires on beadlock wheels so that would put me up to $1145.

just seemed easier to pay $14 more dollars and have them show up ready to slap on the grizzly.

Sounds like you made a decent deal. I try to be loyal to my local dealer but sometimes they don't even come close. So as long as your happy is all that matters. Now you need some of those buzzard decals!!!!

I should mention my local dealer is also back logged really bad at the moment and told me it would be a couple weeks before he could even help me.
