honda rancher 350 will not shift

i am working on a honda rancher 350 for someone and it will not shift it is stuck in 5th gear and will not down shift.....it is an es but even when you try to shift it with the tool t will not shift.....when you try to shift you can push the lever down like it is going to shift but it will not.....it feels like when you down shift or up shift when an atv is off and you have to rock it a lil to get it to click in gear but rocking does not help it....i adjusted the clutches with no luck.....any ideah of what the problem could be?????

thanks for any input

Could have possibly bent the shift forks. Did u have the front case off of the motor. If so when u put it back together u could have put the forks in the wrong spot.

broke shift drum is the most likely problem.

I have been researching this since you replied. Is that something that I will have to pull the engine to check or can I fix it by pulling the front cover?

The first thing to cross my mind was the shift plate.  They had some weak ones back about 00, 02 ish.  Any of them can break though.  What happens there is it'll shift up or down (usually up) but will not shift the other way, so the transmission gets messed with until it can't shift any further (usually fifth gear).  Any time I've seen the shift drum broken it messes up the ES because the sensor is disconnected, but the manual shifter has worked.
That's right under the front cover, and that's the first step to (almost) any possibility, so you wouldn't be out anything for checking that first.  Might get lucky, they're not bad to change,

A visual of the shift plate. If you have an ES model first make sure it won't shift manually.
