Winch problem, Warn contactor

I have a Warn 2.5 that came with my 06 Sportsman.  My contactor quit on me the other day.  All it does is click when I hit the winch switch.

From my research, it doesn't seem uncommon for this part to go out.  What is the primary cause of contact failure and what can I do to prevent it from happening again???  The winch doesn't do me any good if it doesn't work when needed.   Also, is it a Warn specific part or is it a Polaris specific part.

Thanks.

If it is clicking, its probably not the contactor.  Check your connections, positive connection at the battery and the connections at the contractor...that is usually the problem...take them off, clean then and retighten them down

elkbow is correct, check the connections first. Then put a meter on it to see what the deal is. It is a warn part. I have replaced one on my old honda. I think water got to it over the years. It's an easy fix if it's bad. Before I put the new one on, I siliconed it very well all over it. It has been good to go since.

Thanks guys.  I was able to get it to winch out for a few minutes before it gave up again.

the connection at the battery is usually the problem, pull it off, clean it well, make sure that the lugs are flat against each other and tighten good....

as noted by Saw Doctor, swamp water/ swamp crap is likely isolating the winch motor brushes from the cummutator....  Removal and cleaning is in order...

my dads had that prob. it ended being the contactor. it got water in it so all you would here was a clicking noise. when he got a new one he siliconed around the seal so no water would get in.

Picked the quad up yesterday from the dealership.  They ended up replacing the contactor as the original one had cracked near the wire attachment points allowing water into the unit.  It was replaced under warranty.
