Why a by run?
-

Why would there be a 3 wide heat, a few 2 wide heats, then a by run? would it not make more sence to pull a bike off the 3 wide and pair with the guy that was getting a by run?

Every heat is computer generated. If I were guessing, that situation would only occur in the event someone dropped out after the brackets had been built. I know that the reason they go two wide on some and three on others is to prevent by-runs.

thats what i THOUGHT Jay, but we run a 3 wide first heat , two -2 wide heats, then a by run in the open class, same thing in madison. just wondering was there a specific reason for it, or just the way it pans out

Its the computers way of trying to have a 3 wide final. 3 wide=2losers 2 wide=1 loser by=0 losers So if the computer is trying to build a 3 wide final and you have 6 racers it might set up the brackets like this: 1st heat: Racer 1, Racer 2, Racer 3 2nd Heat: Racer 4, Racer 5 3rd Heat: Racer 6 gets a by You end up with a 3 wide final and Im pretty sure that is how it is programed on most of the classes. If you put Racer 6 in the 2nd heat, you end up with 4 people racing for 3rd and that would add 3 more heats to the class. This is also why you only get 1 by run in the series. Hope that makes sense and it is purely an example.

As if we didn't already know, Jay is a smart man. I saw the same thing at Mud Nats and was totally confused until I started working with the software. It's all about generating a 3-wide final. The only times you will see a "3rd place race" is when there weren't even enough racers to generate a 3 wide final (like when there are 5), which should almost never happen. To put it simply, in order to generate the 3-wide final, you need a certain number of first round heats (which then translate to a certain number of second round seats, and finally a 3-wide final) and sometimes the only way to get that is to have byes in there. Whenever you see more than 1, its because someone dropped out after the fact, and unfortunately the other racer in that heat cannot just be pulled up into the other bye because that would eliminate one of those "need to have" first round heats. In order to basically eliminate this going forward, I'm going to confirm everyone participating in each heat during the driver's meeting by calling out the names. If someone has been incorrectly placed for whatever reason, or maybe somehow broke their bike since they signed-up, I'm going to remove them on the computer a re-generate the brackets for that class (should take less than 5 minutes) before we stage. I know this may still be confusing for some folks, and if it is, just please trust us on this....its a necessity and the same format the PSR is following.

I was also wondering, but now it makes sense.. I was just thinking for some reason someone didnt show up to run....(but to maintain the structure it was run the way the heats were lined up) either way I had a blast, look forward to trying it again...next time maybe I can get a by ;-)(lol)

Great explanation. Question # 2 on bi's I know the rules state that you don't have to runif you get a bi but if by chance I do get one, can I anyway? My reason for asking is I would like the same chance at getting a feel for the bottom of the pit as the guys i'd be running against in the second heat.

I think they are going to make everyone make a pass through the pit when they get a by anyway...I know it says in the rules that they wouldnt have to, but I think they are saying now it's not fair to the other racers that have already raced a heat to race a fresh bike in heat two or three so everyone has to at least make it through the pit...

yea you can never tell.. his/her bike may develop problems running,so they should get the same chance as others to possible eliminate themselves? I am by far NOT hopeing some one or wishing any misfortune upon any racer....(cause if I was, i know karma would come and get me next time)
