What size tire Brute Force 650i??

I have a 2006 Kawasaki brute force 650i that I just bought used. What size tire can I turn with a stock clutch. It has 26 inch ams swamp fox's on it now and does just fine. They are on the stock wheels. I am going to put some aftermarket wheels when i get new tires. I want to step up to a 27's or 28's. I am thinking about mudbugs, gators, zillas, laws or backs. I am more worried about if I go with the laws or backs. my only other plans are an hmf. So what can I turn over and still have plenty of power and no belt problems without a clutch kit??? Thanks alot!

26" is about all you can do.  I have 27's on one and there is no way a stock system would make it through the first mud hole. My other with 28" Gators needed one spring.  With springs you can go all the way up to 30"+.  But seeing as you don't want to spend $25-50 and do 15 minutes work to the clutch, you're stuck with what you got.

Its all in how your drive the bike. I got 105 mile out of my stock belt on the 650i with 30x12x14 mudlite xxls all the way round it on stock clutching. The belt woul have lasted longer if I hadnt pulled out a stuck polaris in reverse.

Well I guess I might do some clutch work then. I was trying to keep it pretty much stock. Just dont care for the swamp fox's that much. I would think I would be able to turn the zilla's over fine in the 27" size because they are so light. But if I do clutch work, I might as well get some 27 or 28" silverbacks or oultlaws.

i ran a 29.5 swamp lite for 4 yrs w/o clutch work & it done fine. I put a red secondary in & i got a lot of my bottom end back. You can run a 28 back with a lime green secondary & you will be good to go

Thanks guys. If I decide to just go with a 27" tire, would it be over kill to do any clutch work? Because it turns the 26" fox's with zero problem and they are a pretty heavy tire. I am leaning hard towards Gators, Mud bugs, or zillas. I will get backs if I have the money.

You throwin your money out the window cause in less than six rides you will wish you would have bought bigger tires. I ran 29.5 for two years stock with no problems. I just put clutch spring cause of the sure fact of what if's

You dont need to do anything if your getting 28 or smaller tires, just use low gear when your mudding, climbing, going slow, or when the bike is in a bind. The 650 is just as powerful as the 750 in my opinion (I have both), so with some clutching, you can sling any tire you want.

Thanks a lot guys. This has been a lot of help. I think I am going to go ahead and get some 28's (prolly gators, mud bugs, or laws) and if I need clutching, i will mess with it later. Because i dont want to get to small a tire and then wish i would have gone bigger.

I have a buddy that has a completly stock 2008 650i running 29.5 Laws and the only thing he has done to his clutch is added the EPI Red secondary clutch spring. His 650 has no problems turning the 29.5 laws and still running the original belt that came on the bike. Granted, he had to add a 2" lift to accommadate the 29.5 laws, but that is it.
Also, I have a 2008 650 SRA and I am running 28" Zilla's with a EPI Almond secondary spring with the factory belt as well. I also had to add a 2" lift kit to accommadate the 28's, but I also wanted the ground clearance. I have had some clutch work done to my bike by VForce John, but I had that done for other reasons.
IMO, clutch kits are a waste of money, since all you really are changing is the clutch springs. You can buy the springs that you need for your particular application alot cheaper than you would pay for a "clutch kit". Most "clutch kits" are mainly intended for racing.
When your decideing what size/brand tire you want to go with you need to look at the weight of the tire also. FYI, The Maxxis Zilla's are very light compared to most other tires and have a good aggressive tred for mud and trails. Take in consideration of what kind of terrain that you will be rideing and choose the tire you think would best fit your type of rideing.

I have pretty much made my mind up on 28" zilla's. I really like how light the tire is. They weigh what my 26 swamp fox's do!. But I may look at getting 28 outlaws also. The only thing is I like to go fast sometimes too and may really like the ride of the zilla and the extra power bc the tire is so light.

Then the Zilla's, a EPI Almond secondary spring and a 2" lift kit would be the best choice for your application and rideing style.

you dont NEED a lift til you get up to running 31" tires to keep from rubbing. I have ran 30's, 29.5's, 28's and whatever else with no lift on a 650 and a 750.. I would go with 28x9.5 laws on all 4 corners with no lift. It would be a pretty mean bike then and still have alot of power. 28's wouldnt be anything for the 650i brute even without a clutch kit. If you have any trouble with the belt then just do a $20 EPI clutch spring and thats all you will need but you shouldnt even need that!! I have ran 29.5s on a bone stock brute and never burnt a belt. Good luck and dont get the zilla's, go ahead and get the laws because if your lookin for somethin to pull better than the swamp fox's, the zillas wont be much better!

I prolly would love a set of outlaws. But my biggest fear is breaking axles. What are my chances of breaking them if i just run 28's in laws or backs? This is why i was looking at the zilla's so hard. I want a tire that doesnt dig in like the swamp fox's do. they remind me of vampires which i never have liked. And i want a bigger tire for more floatation when i get in a deeper hole. But yes i have thought about skinny laws or backs all the way around.

You can break an axle with any tire. Main thing that will save you as far as axles is knowing when to take it easy. With an outlaw you dont have to gas on it and sling the tires, they were made to crawl through holes and paddle their way through instead of gassing on it and digging down. Just take it easy on the throttle when your in a hole and you shouldnt have many, if any, axle issues. No matter what tire you run, you always have a chance of breaking axles. Honestly I would see a zilla being a bigger threat because you would be constantly gassin on your bike and spinning them fast to keep them cleaned out, soon as you hit a root then BOOM there goes an axle. Its all in how you control that thumb!

Ok so if I get 28 laws, I should not get fat rears? I should stay skinny all the way around. I have never had skinnys on the back and not real sure what to expect or how it would look.  I know when to use my thumb and when not too. So I'm pretty sure I would not have any problems. I actually take it pretty easy on my bikes. And I love this brute so much that I do not want to tear it up! Any other tire anyone thinks I should look at for a good mud tire but also can play on trails some?

i would go skinny all the way around.. they actually look real good like that. 28x10.5 and 28x12.5 have more of a rounded shell so they ride a little worse, the 28x9.5s are more square and contact more to the ground and have a better ride.

You do not NEED clutch work to spin 28+. Is it highly recommended? Yes. If you do not get in a bind, you will spin the tires perfectly fine. If you get in a bind, you will smoke a belt like it's nothing. If you get a red secondary, your top speed will reduce dramatically. I rode my 30 inch silverbacks for several months without a problem, because I never put them in a bind. I also ride alot more cautious than many people and don't put my bike through much at all. I spoil it...

Don't the 27 outlaws ride pretty smooth?? But would I just regret spending that much money on that small of a tire. I think 29.5s would be too much for what I want, but now I am starting to think about it. I'm starting to like the idea of 28 outlaws though. I think it would make the bike look mean. How well do the skinnys bite in ruts though? Would any of yall recommend silverbacks over laws? And I rarely ride in real thick mud... So do the outlaws and silverbacks have that big of an advantage over the zilla's, mudbugs, or gators which are much cheaper I might add. And yes I know that these 3 tires are in a whole different class than the laws and backs. I wish the bugs werent so hard to find. By far one of my favorite tires I have had.

my buddy had 29.5 wide laws all around on his 650sra with stock clutching and pulled them just fine for 2 years and never burnt a belt up in thick mud at that. did break a couple of front diffs though. his wife got it in a hole that he dug with a backhoe with no water and finally smoked the belt then we changed it and put in a red secondary no problems since. but with the stock clutching i watched him get in a hole that a 700 grizz on 29.5's just got pulled out of and couldnt even turn the tires over at all and the little 650sra turned em just fine. and oh yea we were laughin at that.

Well I have pretty much made up my mind on 27" skinny/wide outlaws. May step up to 28's though. My last two choices are 28"skinny/wide silverbacks. Last choice is 28 skinny/wide zillas to save some money. Shouldnt have any problem turning any of these tires with stock clutching.
