Valve adjustment procedures for all Honda ATV's

Some of the most commonly asked questions in the Honda section are about valve clearances and how to adjust them. So I’ve compiled this guide that shows how to adjust the valves on the most popular Honda ATV’s, both current and non-current.

To all the Honda section regulars, if someone asks how to adjust the valves on a particular Honda ATV, please link them to this thread so they can quickly choose their model and follow the valve adjustment procedure. I have also circled the valve clearance specs within each model’s valve adjusment precedure, so if someone only wants to know the clearance spec, please link them to this thread.

Do you really need to remoave the recoil starter housing on the Rancher 350 to do the adjustment?

No.  What they mean is the recoil starter cover.  This is the small plastic piece that is removed to access the recoil starter handle.  See below.

It has already been stickied to the top of the Honda section.  If you encounter someone asking about valve clearance specs/procedures, link them to this thread and they can choose from the list.

Come on guys, I see lots of valve clearance questions being asked but I don't see the HL regulars linking people to this thread.

I spent a lot of time putting all this information together for HL members, let's make an effort and put it to good use.

Generally speaking, for us "non-tech guys," how often does this need to be done and how do we identify if there is a "valve timing problem."

03 Rincon - HMF exhaust, Uni air filter, 52 Keihin pilot jet, 158 Keihin main jet, dynajet needle on 2nd notch, dynajet spring, 27" ITP Mudlite XTPs on 14" ITP type 7s.

02 Rancher ES 350 w/ Swamplites on aluminum Rubicon rims for the wife.

06 Rancher 350 manual shift for 11 yr old daughter.

On the 420 valve adjustment it states check engine idle speed; is there a way to adjust this?

if your valves are out of adjustment you will hear a slight tapping coming from the top of the motor.  my BB does it pretty bad.

    Only if they are loose.

Most of the time they tighten up.

Valve clearance stays the same. The only time it may change is if you have an aftermarket cam and the cam manufacturer calls for a different spec(I don't know of anyone doing so in the ATV realm).
