Glad you posted this, my service manual only gives me the clearances and no instructions (maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot). I adjusted mine tonight just guessing that it should be on tdc of the compression stroke, but now that you posted this I know I done it right.

Heres a little tip to save you a lot of trouble. The manual will tell you to remove the whole front fender, but theres a way around it.

Remove the left and right side tank plastics (the black ones)and the black plastic on top of the tank.

Remove the two bolts at the front of the tank under the handle bars. It's a little difficult to get to, but can be done.

Remove snorkel pipe. This will require some effort and patience, but it can be done.

Now remove the gear shift lever, there are two bolts on the frame and two screws holding the knob/lever on. Then remove the pin holding the linkage on and store the assembly out of the way.

Now remove the two rubber straps on the tank and it will slide back out of the way. You will have to push up on the fender a little on the left side, but it will come out fairly easy. DON'T FORGET TO TURN THE GAS OFF, the hose will come off and leak gas every where.

Now all you have to do it remove the two rivets holding the tank shield on and bingo your looking at the valve covers.
