rockwells not a good axle for muddin?  You gotta be kidden me!  How does a D60 hold up to a 52 or 54 inch tire?  Are you running 44's?  Step up to a real tire please.  44's don't offer the g/c to go anywhere around here.

And you have what? I do not see anything about what you may be running?

No I think you got to be kidding! Rockwells dont work good on 44 as there is not tire speed. Maybe with a 54 inch tire they may work a little better and that they are heavy as my Ex-WIFE!!

Man invented transmissions for a reason.  All you have to do is shift to a higher gear and you have wheelspeed.
RE: The ULTIMATE mud tire 54" Bogger 2006/11/04 08:26:12
What am i running?  I'm BUILDING my F150 with SAS D60's to go with 40's.  I don't have the money to shell out on bigger motors and rockwells as well as 52's (althought u can find them cheaper than 44's)

Why shall you run such a small tire?  Since the new 47's have come out and 52's seem to be very popular around here.  44's used to be the stuff BACK IN THE DAY.  Step up and get a real tire.  44's are more of a DD tire now a days!

That truck runs a 350 with rockwells and 4 wheel steer and them 52's on double beadlocks with 0 psi of air.  Now explain to me that he is not spinning them tires?

Here is a better picture of the truck.

And here is the hole afterwards.  Reminder:  A 12 year old kid sunk down to his waste in this hole.  It was thicker than you might think.

Ya know it is funny that you are trying to get on my **** about 44's but you are building a truck with 40's??? I have been around the block a few times with big trucks only been doing that almost 20 years.
My statement is Rocks dont work well in the mudd I mean that on a 44? And that is my opinion,
I do not like the 52 Mich tire as I feel it is just not a good mud tire and that it is way to skinny to be that tall? Once again my opinion!
I am not sure if I even like the bogger for the same reason? Still thinking on that one I will know more after i see how wide a wheel I can make work?

As for Rockwell's I have had a truck with them and have a set still to use if I so choose. I need to drive down the road faster then 40 mph also.

But I built that truck a certain way for a reason I want to be able to still drive it down all the back roads and drink a few, I do not want to trailer it everywhere did that **** for years racing Moto-x so f-that. I drive my truck to the Mud Races and drive it home, I also want to feel like it is still a truck and not a gutted trail rig, you know heater,a/c,p/w, you know a street truck that will do much more, I do not want a show truck but a tough truck,

You know we could sit here all day and go back and forth but I do not have the time for that, Like I said I have my opinions and you will have yours and someone else will have theirs and so be it!

What it all boils down to is having fun and getting out and hanging with freinds! That is what we do so if you are ever close and it is raining come on out lets find some mud and tear it up.

id have to say go with rocks for these tires. there is no d60 that will hold up to the abuse. even if you did build one to, you would be in the hole thousands.  put some chromoly's in a set of rocks and be done with it. d60's are way over-rated. and not to mention over-priced. if your saying rocks wont spin the tires fast enough your wrong. you cant just throw some under the truck and go. you have to do your homework on tranny's and transfer cases for the right gearing. if your wondering about clearance issues usa6x6  has weld on pan kits for the rockwells that will give you as much if not more clearance than the d60's.[;)]

The dana 60's will hold up to a plenty of abuse. Have you ever seen sled pulling trucks. Alot of sled pullers in the diesel class run d60's up front and I would have to say that sledpulling is just as hard on them then mudding maybe even a little worse. Hook a 600hp truck with over 1200ft lbs of torque to a 60000 pound sled. I mean they do break I've seen them break before. But they will hold up they are a very good axle.

Cruising backroads isnt the same as standing there watching someone drive.
RE: The ULTIMATE mud tire 54" Bogger 2006/11/05 20:33:43
Sure am not a fan of drinking and driving.  I'm sure some of my friends do drink while playing with their trucks but they don't drive home they normally spend the night or have somebody haul their stuff home as well as them.

I could care less that i don't have a truck that as bad as some truck on 44's.  What do you expect from a college student.  Like i have money to just drop on my truck while i'm trying to do a little bit at a time.  I still don't know how i'm going to afford the wheels and tires without going military.  With one ton running gear i only have $200 so far in just axles.  These axles need stuff like lockers, gears, and brakes but thats usual for a offroad truck that will spend plenty of time on the road.  Am i jelous cause he has a nice truck on 44's?  No.  Do I say the things i say because i'm jelous?  No.  Why does all these things turn into jelousy factors?  Everytime i argue with somebody it ends up that i'm just jelous.

Nowhere have i stated that it is stupid that you drink but drinking and operating machinery (atv's and trucks) are another story.  I'm sorry i don't see the big deal in drinking, Maybe it's my medical condition or it's just the thought of waking up with a hangover after drinking way too much idk.

Not everybody in them pictures i was friends with or even knew.  Acouple of them i knew and if they drank while operating that was their deal.  I knew if they were or not and knew to watch out.

BTW pictures of my truck so far are posted in my yahoo photos.  http://photos.yahoo.com/ctownforeman  There you will find photos of my SAS i am doing to my F150.  I am not nearly done i am just doing small pieces at a time.

Also about the D60 being a great axle.  It is a great axle and will last awhile, but put a 50+ inch tire of there with extreme amounts of thread and see how long it last.  A rockwell axle is one axle that you don't have to worry so much about breaking.  Not saying theyw il break but still they are VERY strong axles.

you also have to think... they  are going in a straight line. not coming out of a steep in-cline sawing the wheel side to side. mostly people break axles when turning and gassing. like i said if you want to dump thousands into a dana 60 to make it as strong as a 1000 dollar set of rocks. be my guest. just my 3 cents

ctown, is there a reason you are going with leafs over coils on your straight axle conversion? is that a HP 60?
RE: The ULTIMATE mud tire 54" Bogger 2006/11/06 06:52:20
Leaf springs are a easier swap from what i have researched.  Also this D60 (which was out of a 1994 F350SRW) is set up for a 36'' spring perch spacing which can allow me to use rear stock brackets off of a leaf sprung ford.  I have debated for acouple years now which i would rather run.  I was going to run a D44 out of a 78-79 bronco/F150 but when i found a D44HD for $75 i bought it.  Acouple weeks later after tearing that axle down i went to the junk yard and found the D60 out of that F350.  All they wanted for the axle and rear leaf springs was $140, couldn't pass it up.  After tearing it down the only thing it really needs is brakes.  They hubs are warn lockouts and have no dirt or mud in them whatsoever.  Yes this is a HP D60.

There is alot more work involved swapping axles into a truck than say, making a cookie cutter lift for a foreman.
