Tell me about your shop/bench vise that you use.

Well i brought this subject up because i thought it would be interesting to see what shop/bench vise everyone is using since 00_nutt sent me a picture the other day of one he just got and me and a friend of mine were just discussing them as well. Everyone knows that a quality bench vise is an extremely useful tool in the garage. Please share what brand and or size you are using and how much you paid for it. A pic would be even better.

I scored this large vintage Wilton Bullet vise with double lockdowns off my Grandfather for free when he passed away. However the thing was just to large and heavy for my needs so i passed it on to my uncle. Now i just use some generic tiny bench vise thats already falling apart.

Heres a pic of the Wilton my grandfather had.

I have a Wilton 110164 bullet vise that has 5" jaws and opens 9". Scored it off the local craigslist at an awesome price. It's old and shows some wear but it's American Made from American Made Steel made by American Citizens. I had been looking for one for a while and when this one came up I jumped on it!! I'd post a pic but imgur server is full so I can't at the moment.

The main one i use is a Parker Model 270 it is very old and worn out but it still works.  It has a 3.25 jaw and it opens about 3.5 inches. We have another that is going to be replacing the parker one day and all it says on the side is "The Gem" 808 1/2 its just a tiny bit bigger than our current vice.

The Parker

Thats a nice chas parker vise. Are the jaws replaceable on it? I think "the gem" means it was made by J.E. Martin Machine Works of Springfield Ohio.

That really is a nice chas Parker!!!! The Gem is nice as well. Here's mine below as I finally got the picture to load. It's been used but turns smooth as butter. I been talking with JPW Industries (Wilton) about replacement jaws for it but apparently it's kinda uncommon. They had me take a ton of pictures and they said they will make some new jaws for me. I'm gonna do a little touch up here and there and will be close to new. Heck I checked similar models that JPW said it compares to and they are upwards of $700 - $800 range for new!!!

$80.00. I thought about going to a machine shop and let them take a little off and regrove them. So I'm gonna weigh my options.

I dont think they are replaceable that was vice around 20-30+ years old when my father bought this place about 30 years ago so i doubt they are. I do know that they are worn so much that the grooves are almost nonexistant on the chuck. The reason its being replaced is we (really more of me) broke the mounting bolt off of the bottom but it welded back on and has been holding for a few months, I will probably end up with it once its replaced because it has helped me do so much fabricating. And when the bol breaks off again i will just drill holes into the base and put 2-3 bolts through it and a table so keep it from moving.

Oh, i got ya we have a old home made press with a 20ton jack great thing to have no matter what size shop you have. It was extremely nice to press together a press fit rear driveshaft for my 300 with it. being that it was not far from a foot and a half in length once pressed together.

I'm ready!!! 40x60 with a 35ft gable off the front all on concrete. There will be other upgrades for it after its built that's really gonna make it nice. A full size car lift and an electric chain hoist on a trolley front to back are a few.

I dont have a shop to build it for but i have a 20ft large I beam and some track wheels, a 2 ton chain hoist, some large roller wheels and alot of 2'' oil field pipe and i was planning on making a movable a-frame I-beam hoist to roll around inside a shop and do what ever with. And by large I-beam if its the one im thinking of its about 12-14 inches from top to bottom and it is HUGE.

I've tried quite a few different vises over the years and Wilton vises have been the best.

Tell me about your shop/bench vise that you use. 2016/01/06 16:12:45 (permalink)
Right now I'm using a Ken tool vise but its about ready to get replaced. It's a couple years old and won't hold anything in place. The Wilton we have on display will be replacing it.
