I bought this monster last night for $30 and an old drill as trade! 1946 Chas Parker Eclipse Machinists Vise No.974.MADE IN THE USA!!!!!! 59lbs-4" jaws--opens to 7 1/2" however the catalog only says 6 1/2". Good condition! Jaws are nice and line up well.Slide works smooth and tight. Ebay has them around $200-$400. The guy i got it from had the same name as me,same medical problems and was built like me. I think i did well :)

Nice score. On the Wilton I think the red ones are made in China and the black colored ones are built in the USA but some of those might have went over seas as well. Americans don't want to work for less than $20/hr + benefits when they have no experience and no education, just a touch of knowledge and they think they are worth twice that. Sad to see that everything has to go overseas to get built so we can still afford to buy it.

Truth.  My Wilton is blueish and while I haven't looked, I know the old man doesn't' buy anything made in China.....

Very nice.  Pretty much anything made before the 70's was made in the USA and will be 1000x's better than anything you can buy now.  Sad but true.

Well guys i know ive seen greenish newer Wiltons both chinese and USA made because i tried to buy a greenish 4" Wilton USA off ebay but got shot down with my offer then looked at Craigslist and found same Wilton vise but is was chinese and missing USA logo. Now im only guessing but if any vise is USA made, its gonna say it on the side. Vise makers im sure know that when it says "USA" theyre gonna get top dollar.

Looked back and found the email when I picked mine up.  It's a 1745, made in the US.  Guess I overestimated the size of it a bit.  My wife says I do that a lot.

I dont think they are replaceable that was vice around 20-30+ years old when my father bought this place about 30 years ago so i doubt they are. I do know that they are worn so much that the grooves are almost nonexistant on the chuck. The reason its being replaced is we (really more of me) broke the mounting bolt off of the bottom but it welded back on and has been holding for a few months, I will probably end up with it once its replaced because it has helped me do so much fabricating. And when the bol breaks off again i will just drill holes into the base and put 2-3 bolts through it and a table so keep it from moving.

I didnt think my chas had replaceable jaws either but they are replaceable. They are held in by pins that are pressed in through the top. They have to be drilled out :(

I still would like to just get our other better vice mounted but i cant ever seem to have enough time to get it done. Since new holes and everything will have to be drilled.

95 Honda 300 Fourtrax-big red rear, 2 inch snorkel, 6 inch lift, 8 inch stretch, 3 inch body lift, 32 silverbacks, locker, M4 motorcycle exhaust, 424, 54% reduction, EPI Economy,

380, 450 clutch, 350D clutch cover all waiting to be installed.

88 honda 300 frame- 350d motor with a 69% reduction, small lift and 31 wides, dual 2.5'' glasspacks, 3.75'' body lift, locker, 450 foreman clutch still dont run

98 honda 300 4x4- all stock for now might get 450 gears and a 317 someday.

Pic pic pic Jeepwm69!!! Bcom nice freaking score buddy!!! And the reason why nothing is made here is because people are living longer and the unions under estimating the life expectancy so the pensions were running short therefore they had to up the wages to build whatever. So these companies that used unions said overseas it is. Look at Detroit automobile capital it's freaking dead cause of unions.

Oh gosh no buddy. Its just not because we're Americans and want American stuff but in the case of a vise, only USA made vises are good. Its a matter of strength and castings. So thats why you see us goin on and on about these old vises. They are the strongest around and getting a good vintage one aint cheap. Youll pay top dollar for USA made vises cuz theyre stronger than anything else. Most vises today are Chinese,so to get a good USA made vises, you have to buy vintage or pay $500-$1000 for new.Look at the first pic i put up and the pic 00_nutt put up. Those are USA made Wilton Bullets. Pretty much the "Cadillac" of vises. Smooth and strong as ****!

Nope.  If you compare a cheap one to a good one, the difference is VERY obvious.  A good one will outlast your great grandchildren.  A chinese POS will probably break, causing you to injure yourself when it does.

Buying new is $$$ if you get something like a Wilton, but if you look around at yard sales, garage sales, etc you can probably find a good US made vice cheap.  Doesn't have to be pretty if it works.

Dad got my Wilton for about $200 and it was new.  Guy had it on ebay with local pickup only, and luckily my cousin lived close to him.  No one bid on it (although he had lots of people wanting him to ship it) so Dad bought it off ebay after the auction ended.

I'll post up my vise in the morning. Not sure what brand or where it was made but we've had it about 15 years. We used to use it for my parents business making alarm boards but we've changed our design of our alarm board so we don't use it anymore so now it just gets used by me when a project requires it. I'm assuming it's USA made since its lasted so long but I'll check it out tomorrow and see haha.
