Spur of the moment vacation ideas

Before I blew a gasket and quit my job, I decided to take some vacation time.  I'd been holding off and was gonna take it all at the end of the yr, but decided to go ahead and do it starting next week.  I myself have never really been on a family vacation.  Never did that kind of thing growing up. I need some ideas on what I can take the family to do.  My son is 3 yrs old.  Not real big on parks like six flags and such.  Can't stand the lines.  Maybe something like the park in Arkansas where you can dig for gold, or something like that.  Maybe Branson, MO?  Hows the beaches on the coast since the hurricanes.  Dont wanna go to a trashy place if ya know what I mean. Need some ideas that me, my wife, and son would all enjoy.

I own nothing.

I didnt even think about Ship Island.  Was gonna go there when I was working in Pascagoula a few yrs back, but we never got around to it.  I'm gonna check into that.  And I dont know about a cruise at the moment with them storms brewing down there, lol.

Branson would be pretty fun for the whole family.  You might be a little late to book a cruise without paying a pretty penny but if you like beaches I'd suggest something like Galveston.  They have a new pier park thing sort of like Kemah boardwalk and you always have Moody Gardens that kids love.  There's a water park by it also.  Good luck with your quest and I'm sure anything will be fun as long as you're getting out of the house!

I think I'm wrong about the Arkansas place.  It a diamond mine, or is there a gold mine place too?  I just remember someone telling my about a place you can dig and keep whatever you find.

I say drive down to New Orleans. Your son would enjoy the Audubon Aquarium and the Audubon Zoo. It's not a far drive from where you are. Maybe the Saints will be playing at home during your vacation time.

Destin/Fort Walton beach area is great for a family vacation. I went last month and rented a condo with three bedrooms/2 bath, kitchen/dining room and awesome view. I liked renting the condo more than hotel because we had a full kitchen and bought food and ate most of our meals there which really saves a lot of money. The place we rented had a couple of pools, lazy river and multiple hot tubs. The beach was across the highway and they provided a skywalk from the condo to the beach.

Galveston is fun, I went last year, the fairy ride to it was really fun! Haha, you could feed all the seaguls crackers and stuff, they'd come and actually take it out your hand. Pretty cool. I didn't like the beaches though, they were nice but they were SO packed you didn't have any privacy at all, the people were friendly but you couldnt just get out by yourself and swim or anything.

My vote is grand isle! I went this year and had tons of fun! The beaches were very nice, it wasn't crowded at all, the closest people too us were about 150 yards. They had clean beaches and it was really nice. You can fish out in the water waist deep anticipating a big shark dorsal fin to swim by, it keeps you on your toes and it's really fun/exciting! They are alot of dolphins out there that I swam with which was awesome! I had a great time! We rented a little shack/house that was nice! It had like 4 rooms and everything you need to use. They have a nice little supermarket down there and a sub way but the resturaunts Suck!! Theirs all closed and the one we went to wasn't good. You have to cook all your own food but it was fine. We ate subway for lunch everyday. It was a great vacation all in all. I will go back.

Gatlinburg TN was very fun too, they have great resturaunts and places to go, they have all kinds of things for entertainment up there. You will never be bored, you could stay there for weeks. And it's an awesome place for a 3yr old. I would highly recommend it! I had a blast there also!

Destin is sweet! The beaches are by far the nicest, with all the white sad and crystal clear water, it makes you never want to leave! You'll want to stay there all day! The Hotels were nice! The beaches wer not as crowded as galvestons either!

Id choose Destin over Galveston everyday of the week. When I went to Galveston last there was literally a wall of sea weed about 2ft high in some places. I forgot what the beach is called but there is a place where you can go and ride 4 wheelers on sand dunes and what not.

Destin has amazing white sand and clear water. Not a huge party area either so good for the family. When we went we rented a little 2 bedroom/2.5 bath house. Was right down the road from the beach. Didn't cost as much as a condo would. Then you can take the shirt drive to Pensicola I believe and go to the boardwalk. Also go to margaritaville. Very nice place.

Galveston is a pretty fun place. Its no Florida beach or such, but for families like mine it is a great less costly weekend or such trip. I've seen pictures from friends of the new boardwalk in Galveston (old spot of the flagship hotel). Looks neat. Ride the ferry day and night. Go to the end of the sea wall (past the Galvestonian) and see the ship channel. La Kings candy shop on the strand. Bennos on the beach is probably our favorite sea food on the island. Marios Pizza. This has been a place real special to my father since he lived there for Med school so we go back regularly a few times a year.

If you think your fam. will like the beach then I would say Destin hands down.  We just got back on Saturday. We stayed for a week and it was great.  Between the white sands, crystal clear water, and the new harbor walk, you cant get much better for a state-side beach getaway. Another thing to think about if your going in the next couple of weeks is that school is starting back up and you should get some killer deals on beach houses, condos, or hotel rooms.  Its def. up there on my list for close to home vacations.

There is tons to do in Galveston.  Go to Seawolf park and check out the WW2 sub on display or the destroyer.  rent a quad-bicycle and stroll down the historic seawall, or go to schlitterbaun water park.  Whenever my wife and I go, we like to stay at Guido's because its across the street from the water and is very affordable.

Well, my wife wont be able to take off very long, so we're probably gonna just do a wk end thing now.  Might leave early friday morning and head to N.O. to the audubon and the aquarium.  Trying to squeeze something into a weekend.  I got some work to do around the house, so I'll do that and then load the bike up and go ride some places I aint been in yrs.  Might head over to Camp Claiborne, then Red Dirt and make a day of that now I actually have a legal bike and wont get fined. Yeah, they will do that.  Got 2 tickets yrs ago in 2 weeks, lol

You should check out Gulf Shores Alabama, it was rated in the top 10 cleanest beaches in the country along with Orange Beach ( our neighboring city). It's a very family oriented place lots to do around here as well and not as crowded as Destin is. PM me if you would like some contact info on a condo rental.

New Orleans is cool but Gulf Shores/Orange Beach would be my pick.. It's only 3 more hours past New Orleans.. We go 2 or 3 times a year but we stay at a campground.. I like that type of atmosphere better than the condo/hotel thing.. Plus an RV campsite is only $30 a night! We can use the rest of our vacation money for eating at places like Lambert's or the Oyster House! And your kid would love Waterville USA.. They have an entire section dedicated to toddlers.. My 3 little girls had a blast..
