Ive been looking at the shim mod and i was wondering if anyone else is running it on there 700? Does anyone have problems with it? would it be enough alone without a clutch kit for 30's?

i would get 8 kodiak 450 weights along with the shim and it should do fine. i done the shim mod along with the extreme clutch kit and it was a big improvement over just the extreme clutch kit

it will give you higher reves when at a speed of 35 or so.. its because the belt is ridding lower in the sheve.. so you will loss some top speed but gain on the bottom end..

Ya you can do just the shim but for 30"+ tires you need atleast 4 kodiak weights, white EPI spring and then 2mm of shim.

    Re:Shim mod for grizzly 700 2009/08/07 17:01:27 (permalink)
weights change the width of the primary sheaves with RPM, the lighter weights you have the higher it revs to get the same amout of travel as with heavier weights.

secondary clutch holds the belt tighter and a little higher in the secondary, and requires more force to spread the sheaves apart, so it stays in lower gear longer with stiffer springs.

the shim increases the width in the primary which allows the belt to ride lower in the primary, which reduces gearing some.

I have a 550 with 30" backs.  The shim didn't make that much of an improvement over the clutch kit IMO.  I can tell it's there but glad it wasn't more than $8.  You will need the white secondary and at least 4 kodiak weights to get it to run good.  When you put those heavy beast on (mine tip a little over 60 w/ wheel each) you are going to lose alot of power.

Is there anyone machining the primarys for the Grizz..?  this is the best way to go IMO, you get more lowend and dont lose any top end on them at all.
I had 3.2mm cut out of mine which is a pretty big drop in gearing. I know theres alot of KQ700 guys that have had this done as well.

The shim helped mine out quite a bit.  Lower gearing throughout the powerband.  My grizz won't hit the rev limiter w the stockers or 28s so I lost no speed anyways.  I'd run a shim even on a bone stock unit.  Really, the larger tires make up for the lost ratio in the CVT in most cases.  But, GWC is right, re-angling the primary would be ideal.

i was looking at my primary sheave today while installing the white secondary spring and from what i saw, i don't think i would install any shims. the belt is riding low already and if a shim was added, the belt would ride way too low and bottom out on the shaft. possibly start slipping.

I have tried a few different setups on my grizz.  here's what I tried and the results.

first- changed to 4 kodiak weights and 4 stock weights.  increased bottom end a little, helped with 28" swamplites.  (terrible tires but thats another conversation)

second- added 1.5 shim.  small increase in bottom end...  not enough to tell any difference really.  (running 28" zillas)

third- removed 1.5 shim and added the epi white spring to the 4 kodiak weights.....  happiness..  torque monster now.  Done with clutch work.  :-)

I'm thinking of doing mine. Just looking for a spare one to send away and get done. Didn't have any luck finding someone to do it up here in Canada.

Haven't had a problem w slippage, but I did run 8x 660 weights for awhile.  The machine revved out too much and didn't accelerate quickly enough for me.  Too much noise as well.  I took them back out and put the stockers in.
