Rear Differential Seal for Honda 420

Hey guys I have a 13 Rancher and I am having trouble with the rear oil seal leaking. It is the one where the driveshaft goes into the diff. I came outside the other day getting ready to ride and I noticed that there was a puddle of oil under the rear diff. I am wondering how to get this seal out because it looks as if it is pressed into the diff. Will I have the pull the diff apart and take out the ring and pinion gears to push the seal out? Already have a new seal sitting on the work bench ready to be installed.
Thanks guys
Brad

You can take a screwdriver and use it as a pry bar and pop it out then just take a socket the same size as the seal and tap the new one in. You should not have to take it all apart.

I'm going to have to do this on the 08 I bought to rebuild.   http://forum.highlifter.com/08-Foreman-project-I-just-picked-up-m4993421.aspx

Took the rear brake apart Monday to put new seals in it and the drum and cover were full of what looked and smelled like water mixed with gear oil.  Smelled like my ex-wife's cooking.

Got it cleaned out and the brake works now, and went to change the rear diff fluid and got some water and sludge, so pretty sure all the rear diff seals need to be replaced.

    Ordering them today.

I tried your method last night @00_NUTT and broke 2 screwdrivers trying to get the blame thing out. Not sure what to do now. Maybe a heavy duty pry bar? At work right now so i will have to try it later. What happened to me was I slightly overfilled the diff (about 3 ounces instead of the 2.5) then water got in and BAM! Appreciate the suggestion nutt

Hey we are all here to help. Maybe one day it might be me asking you for something. Main thing is don't be scared that you may mess something up. It's only the seal that you can really damage unless you go balls out on it!!!!!!

Welllllll I'm having a little trouble with the rear end again. Or at least I think its the rear end. So when I am riding the bike and cruising in 3rd or 4th gear, I hear this roaring sound coming from either the rear end or in the motor. But when I push the shifter either down or up (to engage the clutches) the roaring stops. Its so bad I can feel the vibration in the floorboards. Also when I turn at full lock to the left I hear a popping sound from the same area. I'm assuming either the diff bearings are bad or the u joint is screwed. Any suggestions? Thanks fellas

B Rad jack your bike up under the frame and start turning the rear tires checking for slack. It may be the brake bearing if not the diff. But I think jacking up the bike will lead you closer to the problem.

Got to mess with it some today. I grabbed the driveshaft and tried to move it up down to see if that bearing was bad, and it has a little bit of up and down play. I also changed the diff fluid again and metal shavings poured out. Not sounding good is it . And I took the lift off too.

I gotta go through the 08 FM rear end I picked up.  Rear end is clunking it in pretty bad.  I ordered all new bearings and seals for it.  That stuff all adds up if you buy OEM!

I have had good luck with allballs, some people do some dont, I have their balljoints and bearings in everything on my 300 and the balljoints have been pressed in and out 5 times because i used them with my old lift too and on my stock a-arms.

95 Honda 300 Fourtrax-big red rear, 2 inch snorkel, 6 inch lift, 8 inch stretch, 3 inch body lift, 32 silverbacks, locker, M4 motorcycle exhaust, 424, 54% reduction, EPI Economy,

I've had horrible luck with All Balls.  Have had one good set, and three sets that were undersized and loose in the knuckle.  I finally realized it was the bearings and not worn out knuckles (luckily I didn't throw the knuckles out).

I've put one set of Pivotworks in that have held up, and the last two sets I've used have been Boss and they seem to be good.

I'd already ordered all new seals for the rear end, and then realized i needed bearings too, so it was kind of the "in for a penny, in for a pound" thing.

I've always had pretty good luck with all balls. Some of my buddies haven't had as good of luck as i have but I'll use them before i buy any overpriced oem parts. Or at least they are overpriced where I'm at. Anyway do any of you 420 guys ever check your front drive shaft? I just messing around with it yesterday night staring at it and admiring it and what not and i grabbed the front drive shaft an i could turn it about halfway around? Not sure if this is normal or not just figured I'd ask. Thanks guys.

I'll be down there the next weekend. I need to find out what's wrong with ol girl first though. I am leaning towards bearings because i don't know of anything else that would cause a roaring sound like that. I wish you guys could hear it. Something might have gotten in the bearing when i changed the seal out maybe? Who knows. I'll prolly pull the rear end sometime this weekend and I'll snap a few pics and post em here.

Found the problem. The bearing in the diff where the driveshaft goes in was shot. Was out riding around and hit one of the holes on a trail we call "the swamp buggyin" trail and it was pure peanut butter type stuff and I get about halfway through and bam! Loud pop and rear end stop pulling. Got pulled back by an artic kitty (he won't stop giving me heck about either lol). Driveshaft and the pinion gear are stripped . So more money more money lol but I'll get her fixed.

For riding at Busco you'll save yourself a ton of money in the future by filling the rear diff with grease instead of gear oil, been there done that. The clay silt in the mud there destroys bearings quick, and 420 rear ends like the 300 are HORRIBLE about getting water in them anyway. I did 2 rebuilds before having to replace the entire diff on my 08 420 riding at Busco for about a year and a half, I greased the new rear end and didnt have a single issue, with the rear end anyway, for the next 3yrs till I sold it.

Just saw Hondaguys post^ sorry haven't been on in a while lol, Great idea although I have some questions. When you pack the rear differential full of grease, Is there a chance that the differential could run hotter? Like say I'm cruising at about 35 or 40 for a few minutes going between trails or riding hardpack, would the grease be able to lube the gears and bearings just like gear fluid would? Is there a specific type of grease that is best to use? Also how does one go about packing the differential with grease? Thanks in advance fellas
