07 CanAm Renegade = fantastic maching! I am LOVING this one! 09 Polaris 550 XP = disapointment in power and handling - traded after only 9 months 97 Polaris Explorer 500 = great machine, had it for 8 years 99 Polaris Sport 400 = two stroke - fast and fun, but only 2 wheel drive - sold it to get a 4x4 http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y280/SFC_Hall/ATV/

So..what kinda exhaust are yall using? And should I order the 2" HL lift AND springs, or just the lift? The springs are worn out bad, but I figures I could build a spring spacer for the springs and save 100 or so..Lemme know! Thanks

As far as exhaust goes, stick with the stock system. The gains for an aftermarket system ,especially on the older models such as this, are so minimal that you he would never tell the difference. If he is worried about the exhaust under water, That is not a problem with the 500s expesially the older ones. I have two 01s (magnum 500 and a Sportsman 500 HO) and they both will idle all day long in water well over the racks with no problems. If it dies under water then the issue lies with either water in the sparkplug, steam in the intake tract or water being sucked into the overflow tube that hangs below the carb. He will have to modify the CVT exhaust snorkle to run in water that is much higher then the top of the tires as the stock CVT exhaust outlet is below the fuel tank near the fuel turn off valve. Also reroute all the ventlines from the transmission and front gear case and carb to a higher location as they are pretty low also. As far as lifts. he may run into cv joint issues on the front axle if he goes more then 1 1/2 inches in the front. When I lifted my Magnum 500 2 inches in the front 2 inches I blew 3 front CV joints in less then a month and that was only ridding it a few times on the weekends. I dropped the front lift to about 1 1/2 inches and installed Gorilla axles and have not had a problem in 6 years. He will need to clutch it for sure if he plans on running 26 or bigger agressive mud tires in thick real mud or his belt will not last long. Heelckicker is usually my first choice for this but Team Industries is coming out with some great products also. High range is for higher speed running on flat hard ground. Low range for all hills, slower riding (less then 20 mph) and pulling anything. This means that he must stay out of high range when hitting the holes, hills or back woods boondocking.

With a good clutch kit, the 500's will pull 30" Mudzilla's in thick mud. But, you will be reduced to Low gear even when your on the trails. [8|] I live in Louisiana, so I think I know what qualify's as mud. I've seen worse mud coming out of my faucet than what's found in ND! [;)]

I pretty much agree with everything said above. I will add that if you plan on running deep water, a bead of silicon around the airbox lid is almost a must. Everyone i've seen leaked. Only thing i could tell that was gained with my Wileyco or other aftermarket exhausts was throttle response and noise! No usable power increase.

I don't see a 500 HO turning anything over an agressive, wide 27 in really thick mud. i would keep it under 28 and run a clutch kit. I know mine seems sluggish with 27's, I don't see 29.5's or 30's as even an option. Not to mention the extra strain on belts, drive train components and steering components that oversize tires entail.

Instead of silicone, I use lite smear of water proof grease on the gasket. This way you don't have to cut the silicone to access air box, the grease kinda swells the rubber also giving a good tight seal. I run 26" mud bug R 's now, light weight good all round tire. Have to weigh were and how much mud you actual ride. We dont do much, but when we do it usually is muskeg. Think duals would work best there, tracks tend to sink. 80% dry, 20% mud is probably my riding. I would not go any bigger than 27"'s myself, had them on a 500 AC took alot of power away.
2006 sportsman 500, 2500lbs warns front and back, Mud Bug R's, Maxxis 4x4 rims, 1.5" RD lift.
