Operation Big Bore

Hey guys! I recently decided to pick up another Honda 300 after going on a 9 day Elk Hunt, & I was the only one without a quad!

After the trip, I managed to snag a 1995 Blue Honda 300 in darn good shape! I paid good coin for it though.. $1700. It came with a cheap winch mounted on a front bumper, & a plow. ( traded the plow & winch/bumper for the EBC & Air Filter with a store credit still )

The next day I called up Highlifter and placed my order.

Sounds like a good little project your fixing to start. With all your doing motor wise you should be able to spin the tires no problem. With that being said why didn't you just do a gear reduction as it would have been way cheaper. If the motor is tight and not ticking outside the norm I couldn't do it. Good looking bike!!!

Re: Operation Big Bore 2016/10/09 21:52:12 (permalink)
Thanks guys.

This isn't my first 355. I had one years ago that I sold in 2013. I'm building this one exactly the way I had my other one. Temps were never an issue, as I failed to mention I'll install a small oil cooler. I cooked my stock rockers before. So I installed an oiler cooler. I'll do the same this time, except run the hardened rockers.

It will spin the executioners NO problem. I don't want a gear reduction, as I"ll be using it for hunting & fun. Top end on the old one was 60mph. To this day, the ole girl is till going. Sold it to a guy I know.

This build is retarded expensive as prices have gone up, and exchange rate from the US dollar to Canadian is mental!

After it's all said and done... I bet it will be a 6K Honda 300

Heres where I'm at now....

Everything is coming along very good. I'm going to sand the control arms, then apply rust converter & bedline.

Have to pick up new OEM balljoints, & wheel bearings. I refuse to use All Balls anymore. My personal experience is that they wear out a lot faster! There is new All Ball bearings installed in the hub now. They will be removed!!!

The steering stem bearing & bushing appear fine with no play. I'm going to take the bushing off and grease it up though.

Made very small head way this evening. Just got back home from a nice mountain getaway....

Managed to get the transfer case output shaft deal out and replaced. When I went to grab a new input diff seal, I realized that was the seal I didn't have any was on back order. The two axle seals look like they will fit but are a lot different than what's in there now. I have two seals which are supposed to be for the propeller shaft. WAY too large. So tomorrow I'll hit up Honda and see what's going on.

I got the steering shaft off, greased up, & new tie rods installed. I managed to get the control arms all sanded, rust converter applied, & I'll get the primer & first coat on tonight. Decided to go with gloss black over the Bedliner. I'll post up more pics tomorrow.

Thanks!

Today I talked to Webcams. The 40b has been profiled. They had to order in rockers to profile as I won't have my top end apart for another week and half. So the timing should work out good as I'll have the jug off by mid next week. Found a machine shop that can install the new sleeve for $150.

I've used these axles before. They are made by a company called Gambit. They are very well made and durable.

I also used gambits on my old 4'' lift pretty strong axle as far as im concerned but both my inner boots cracked and tore within 20 miles of riding

I tore the boots on my gorillas in two rides. Didn't know there was a freaking break in procedure. So when I replaced them and rode again I'd go a ways then pour water on them. Never had a problem again so the gambits might have the same issue.

I can assure you the gambits did not. This is the angle they were being ran at when they cracked. wich was something like 25* basically the same as stock i never got around to mazing them out for fear of dtroying the boots.

Well this is where I'm at....

Front end all together and torqued. Replaced the balljoints I previously broke installing. Brakes all flushed and bled. Everything torqued. With the new front Shocks, I couldn't use the HL lift. The boots were hitting the control arms! They are actually longer than oem. I have 12' clearance to the frame as it sits now.

Cylinder, Sleeve & Piston at machine shop. Dropping off the head to have the valves looked and seals replaced tomorrow.

New Rubber be here Nov 10th. Web Cams shipping the Rockers & Cam Monday.

I hope to have the clutch, springs, & cam chain installed tomorrow. She's coming along nice!

Only dilemma... what exhaust to install. My last one had a White Brothers. This time around I may buy a full ss FMF for a 300ex.. but I'm really leaning towards an HMF.. What are your guys thoughts??

I would get the good oldschool full supertrapp system imo. Either that or a spark racing x6 for a 300ex. big gun also sounds good for a 300ex.
