Re: New Guy From West TN Honda 300 2016/08/17 21:39:30 (permalink)
Ok. Thanks, will do.

Let's start with the plan for this bike.
I want to build a good, tough, reliable, mud bike. I want to tackle the nastiest holes and soup I can find without worrying about is this thing going to quit on me. So I'm taking my trusty 1993 Honda fourtrax 300 4x4 that I have had for about a year and half, and building it. I have rode the bike a lot and have been kinda hard on it but that's the name of the game when it comes to mud lol.
I am going to build a bolt on swing arm stretch, rear brake delete, 28-30 inch tires, wheel spacers, probably extend the A-arms a few inches and put spacers up front. I do want to keep my front brakes since I just got them working the other day. I have already done all new front wheel bearings and seals, and greased the rear differential and transfer case. I already have a 2 inch lift kit on the bike and a snorkel that doesn't leak, and the crankcase vent is tied into it. I have to rebuild the engine soon because it's smoking and ticking in the top end. So I am going to build it up right, with a big bore kit, high performance cam and valve train. Then a gear reduction and clutch kit to turn those big tires.

I already picked up some shocks for a 300 ex and an oil cooler to use on the bike and I got a blown up rear differential that I will cut up the brake panel for the delete.

So basically my plan is big lift, big tires, strong motor to pull it and to make this thing reliable as it would be from factory. I will get pics up soon.

Im Chase.
Current garage:
93 Honda fourtrax 300 4x4, snorkel, 2 inch lift, mudlites (needs rebuild)
92 honda fourtrax 300 "The Basher" 54%GR, 3inch lift, 30in mamba lites, lots of custom work.
2015 Polaris rzr 900 trail edition.
74 cj 5 Jeep. 3 inch lift and 33s.
70s coot utv.
86 Chevy k30 flatbed daily driver and also weekend wheeler.

For the motor I'd scrap the big bore kit and cam. Put you a 54% gear reduction and a 317 kit for the top end. It will make you a very reliable motor with the 317 kit and the 54% will give you what you need to spin big tires. Just build you a stretched solid swing arm and make you an extended rear shaft. The front is where the money is gonna pile up as you will need some new longer cv shafts. Don't cut and stretch them. If your gonna spend the money on shafts you might as well build you some custom arched a-arms. Now with out going crazy you can stuff some 28's pretty easy under your bike but you might need to trim the back fender a hair. So there is plenty to do but budget is gonna tell you which way to go. If you want a big 8" lifted bike save your money and do it right.

So you think the 317 and gr and no cams and such will be enough ? What is involved in a 317 kit?

I want enough lift to get through the slop but still be able to drive it without laying over when I try to turn around. I will probably need to new CVs soon anyway.

I am not new to fabrication and welding. I basically live in a full fabrication and machining shop, that my dad owns. So I have full run of the place and the skills to build what I want.

You can buy a bolt on 317 kit from a guy on facebook or i have his number. If you get the 317 imo i would get a web 459 cam and maybe even have the head ported and polished but thats not nessecary because it really puts out its potential power when you add that cam. As far as tires i can tell you you can clear 32s easily with a little bit of a stretch if you have a body lift with it. But for the main thing to get you started i would do a 2-3'' stretch a 300 ish tire 317 54% and 459 and call it a day. And for a big lift buy the axles dont sleeve the stockers. Now for a stock suspension 300(kinda) on 32s with a body lift here that is.

95 Honda 300 Fourtrax-big red rear, 2 inch snorkel, 6 inch lift, 8 inch stretch, 3 inch body lift, 32 silverbacks, locker, M4 motorcycle exhaust, 424, 54% reduction, EPI Economy,

380, 450 clutch, 350D clutch cover all waiting to be installed.

88 honda 300 frame- 350d motor with a 69% reduction, small lift and 31 wides, dual 2.5'' glasspacks, 3.75'' body lift, locker, 450 foreman clutch still dont run

98 honda 300 4x4- all stock for now might get 450 gears and a 317 someday.

Also keep in mind the front picture has the fender drooping down it has about 2'' to clear before it hits the tire when the fender isnt drooping. I just re read your post and it seems you dont want a large lift, the best thing to do if you dont want a big boy lift with the turning radius of a small truck. Is to take 06-14 right side (gorilla or rhino brand) 500 foreman axles and make a 4'' lift and a 4-5'' stretch for a little more clearance than stock and have arched arms at the same time.

317 kit is a rancher 350 sleeve put in to a honda 300 jug. Use a big red 250 cam and the big red cam chain. Use the stock 350 rancher piston or put you a high compression one if you choose. It makes a very reliable motor with the 54%

Now when you say lay over you mean struggling to turn it?

If I had what you had available the sky's the limit. The axles will cost but you will save by doing everything yourself.

Now you could run an axle paddle and that would get you trough just about anything.

you cant use a high comp 350 rancher piston its too tight of clearance, it has to have the custom thick gasket made for it or 3 base gaskets as is a high comp 350 would be way to tall. Also i do agree thats a nice looking red one to start with.

Forgot the gasket. Call cometic and they can make you one. Just tell them what your doing. Scratch high comp piston. The 459 cam i would not suggest. Had one and did not care for it.

Thanks for your input guys.

Theblue300: I have seen some of the videos on YouTube of that blue bike and it is a awesome looking bike. I will have to check out video of the red one.
Also where can I find that 317 kit you where talking about?

00_nutt
What I mean by lay over is turning over every time I turn around. I have seen some pics of a 300 that seat had to be head high on and was no wider than stock it looked like.

Thanks for liking the bike

Here are some more pics.
I built the floor boards and stick stoppers. I also did the hand guards, snorkel, nd mounted the light bar.
I also recovered the seat myself. I used green because I had it laying around lol

I ended up with a blown up rear diff from a buddy of fine. It was free so I will strip it down and use the brake backing plate to build my brake delete.

Call the local Honda dealers and price the parts yourself for the 317. Its pretty simple, I've done 2 now. I've got the part numbers for the custom cut Cometic gaskets. Let me know when you get ready for them, makes ordering much easier. And you could ask some of the more experienced engine builders on here, or maybe someone that has done it before but I think an aggressive 459 cam may have too much lift with the 317, and piston to valve clearance may be an issue. I have no clue if that is true or not, but its worth checking out prior to dropping any money.

I like the light bar set up, I've always been jealous of the Foremen center light and have been thinking of doing a set up similar to yours with 2 Pods.

Got the diff basically torn down. Used a porta ban and hammer more than anything because it was so messed up. The brake drum was in many pieces. Which helps lol.

Thanks for the info on the cam.

I like having the bar on the handle bars. It's super bright uses almost no juice and just a all around better light than the stock junk.

That's good to know, A 40b may be in my future then. Did he stack an extra base gasket or anything? Or was it the standard 317 instillation?

He used a custom thick base gasket it's the same as 3 stacked stock gaskets but it was just standard 317 install nothing special for the cam

Thanks for the input guys.

I like the look of thay bike with 8 inch's of lift.

My buddy is parting out a 400ex that has some long A arms on it. I might get them and mod them into what I need.

What axles did you use with that lift and what size tires?
Thanks

Also I got the brake backing plate cut down today for the brake delete.
Picked up new bearings and seals for the panel also. Tomorrow I will probably try to get it on

How do I remove the rear drive shaft? I know when I pull the diff it won't fall out so how does one take it out?
Thanks so
