Need Help Grizzly 600 wont start

My grizzly 600 barely started a couple days ago and now it wont even start by electric start. the only way it will start is if i pull start it. does this mean the starter motor is out? or could it be something easier to fix. another weird thing is i pull started it to ride and ran out of gas so i kicked it over to reserve and pressed the start button and it kicked it over! however, i tried to do it again and it would'nt start. if yall could help id appreciate it.

Might be a bad battery. I just put a new one in mine yesterday.

battery could have a bad cell allowing enough juice for some things but not enough to turn over the starter.  Test the voltage on it, or better yet, pull it out and take it to your local autoparts store and have them put it on a tester

    Re:Need Help Grizzly 600 wont start 2010/06/14 15:15:28 (permalink)
By what do you mean that it won't start with the electric starter? Does the motor crank over but will not start? Or do you mean that nothing happens when you press the start button? Do you hear a clicking sound coming from the soleniod?

On the "reserve" question, what do you mean here as well? The engine just wouldn't start up OR would not crank over?

If you mean the engine does not turn over at all when you press the starter button, then you could have a loose battery terminal, a bad battery, a bad solenoid, or a bad starter motor.
The first thing to check is your battery terminals for tightness. If they are tight, then keep reading. If they are loose and after you tighten them you still have the problem, thne kepp reading. If you tighten them and your problem goes away, thne stop reading.
Since it happened all of a sudden, I do not suspect your battery is the problem. Not saying that is is not. But most of the time batteries don't just die all of a sudden. They slowly die over time and get weaker and weaker with use. It usually will give you indications that it will be needing replacement soon. Clicking or buzzing noises coming from the solenoid is one of those indications.
Since you said it just happened all of a sudden, I suspect your starter motor is to blame. But you should first check your solenoid for operation, since they can and do often fail suddenly...like most electrical devices. This can be done very easily with a volt meter of ohm meter. If you do not have one of these, you can purchase a cheap multimeter at just about any hardware store, autoparts store, etc.
The starter solenoid on the 600 Grizzly's is located under the left rear fender. It will have a red wire from the battery on the far back post, and a black wire on the forward post. It will also have a black connector. Since the red wire is connected directly to the battery then you should have constant voltage supplied to it (Atleast 12.5 or more volts with a good, charged battery). Turn on the key ignition and press and hold the starter button. With the button held down, check for voltage on the black wire. There should be voltage. If not, more than likely the solenoid os the problem.>>>BUTU thne you could also have a bad starter switch. I am not going to get into troubleshooting that now. Do these checks first.
If there is voltage present, then this means everything up to the starter motor is working properly and the starter motor is the problem. They can be reuild with new brushes if they are not in that bad of shape internally. You can also do another check with this as well. Again tunr on the ignition switch and again press and hold the starter button. Then take a hammer and tap on the starter motor. DO NOT hammer it hard. Just slightly tap it. If the engine turns over, then you have worn starter motor brushes and they need to be replaced.

Now this is just a guide line for help with troubleshooting your atv. If indeed your negine is turning over when you are pressing the starter button but will not start, then all the typing I just did was for nothing because you have a separate problem. If again this is indded the problem, then let us know and we can help steer you in the right direction of what your problem is.

thanks dezz for writing all that, im sure that wasnt any fun. I have trouble clarifying when i ask questions sometimes thats my bad. ok let me try again, the only problem i have is the electric starter, i can pull start the bike just fine and the motor will run fine. the starter motor will not turn over at all.

All the battery terminals are tight

i dont have a volt meter but i think theres voltage coming through because i can hear the solenoid clicking when i press the electric starter

Let me know if that is enough to know that its not the solenoid or if i should get a volt meter to check.

Also, if it is the starter motor, how hard is it to take off?

The starter motors are not that hard to remove. It is located in front of the engine, close to the bottom. You will have to remove one of the black fenders to get a good access to it. I would remove the Right Front since the bolts for the starter are on that side.

BUT.....I don't think your starter motor is the problem. Now that I got more information, I think your battery is done and needs to be replaced. There are a couple ways to make sure. One is to have a multimeter and check for voltage. If the battery voltage is less than 12.5 volts (with no load), then its done and needs replacement. But since you don't have a meter, just use a set of jumper cables and hook up to another vehicle and boost it. Just like boosting a dead battery on a car. If your machine starts, then the battery is gone. This is a easy and quick way to troubleshoot a dead battery.
    Keep us posted.

If it's not the battery, it might be the solenoid. Make sure you have a good battery and make sure it's charged. Now, take an old screwdriver and jump the two terminal posts on the solenoid. If the starter turns, the solenoid is bad.

I tried it and it still didnt turn. i tried jumping it and also didnt turn so i guess at this point the only other thing it could be is the starting motor so if yall have any advice from here id love it guys

Take a set of jumper cables and hook one end of the cables to a known good battery. I would hook them to a good car battery. Next, hook the other end directly to your starter. Hook the ground to the starter casing, itself, and touch the hot to the hot terminal or post on the starter. If the starter doesn't turn, then the starter is bad.

Yeah, hook the ground to the starter casing, itself and touch the hot to the post on the starter that the black wire from the solenoid hooks to. By doing this, you are sending power straight from the battery to the starter. If the starter don't turn, then the starter has to be bad.

That oil light is supposed to come on for a few seconds and then go back off. That is just to let you know that the oil light circuit is working properly.

Yeah, that's what it is. You could ground it anywhere on the engine, but I always ground them directly to the starter, so I can have the best ground possible.

I don't pretend to know everything but I had the same problem on my kodiak and could pull start it but just get a "clicking" sound when I pushed the start button.  When I got it home, I started pulling all the fuses and electrical connections to clean and put dielectric grease on them.  Well, my starter solenoid is built with a bracket and fuse connection on top, when I pulled it loose, the whole thing broke in half.  Apparently 4 years of playing in the mud corrodes them right through.  $45 later, I'm back in business.  So my solenoid was good, just the connections corroded in half.  Good luck...

Forget the rectifer, that's not the problem. Jump the starter like they told ya BUT they are wrong saying it's bad if it don't turn over. IF YOUR VALVES ARE TOO TIGHT and the piston is on the compression stroke to TDC the starter motor will not have the power to turn the engine over and THIS makes you think the starter is BAD. All you will hear is the selonoid click.
Now you said when it ran out of gas and you tried it the starter  WORKED. This is why I'm mentioning this. Play with the rope starter, pull it some to get the piston in different positions while trying the starter button.

Hey guys here is just an update I took off the starter and cleaned it and made sure the brushes were fine. then i put it back on and it still didnt start. I started the bike up via the pull start and then tried to press the starter and it didnt even wind up. so i guess im gonna go and buy a new soleniod because thats pretty much the only other thing i havent checked.

Good thing i didnt buy a soleniod because i finally got my hands on a voltage meter and the solenoid works! now i guess its definitley the starter but i have no clue what it could be? any ideas? i took it apart once already and the brushes looked good enough and i also cleaned the whole thing.
