My Foreman on 31s

I need some opinions on this. I know there's a few members on here running 31s on their foremans, not 2012+, but the carb ones. I ordered a 450 swing arm and drive shaft yesterday and I have the secondary GR, .50 over P&P head, and small stuff like pipe and filter. Would it be worth it to swap from my 30 inch mud lites(pontoons) to 31 s/w laws? Would a primary be necessary? I'm just tossing ideas around because these mudlite a float insanely, it's either 29.5 terms, 31 laws, or 29.5OL2

I vote 29.5 OL2 because my bike pulls the heck out of them, and they fit nicely with the 450 swingarm swap.

This is mine with 450 swjngarm swap, 2" lift in front, sitting next to a 6" lifted 2wd 300

HOLY SHAT!!!! Your bike sits so high in The rear. I did the math and a set of 31 skinnies only weighs 11lbs per all 4 tires than my s/w mud lites

Correction. My bike SAT so high in the rear. Where it sits now makes that pic look like a tonka toy haha.

in that pic all I had was a 450 swing arm swap with my shock mounts relocated as high as possible without putting my u joint in a bind. It did alot.

Haha I forgot you lifted it. Can you post some pictures of exactly how you relocated
Your shocks, and of your u-joint angle

I bought the swingarm with the shock mounts already extended. They arent relocated but just made taller pretty much.

Here's the shock mounts. They aren't the prettiest in the world, but they got the job done.

Here's the bike up on the jack after the 450 install. You can get a good idea of what angle the rear driveshaft was at. Kinda steep for me, but the U-joint wasnt in a bind so I was good with it.

Other than a shock relocation,  what all is required to do this swap?  Thanks in advance

450 swingarm and driveshaft. That's it. Gives you just enough stretch and lift to fit 29.5's or 30's nicely under the fender, as you see in my pics, Run a 2" lift up front to even it out.

EDIT: The swingarm mounts where it attaches to the right side axle tube is slightly wider on the 450 than the 500. This requires one of two things, bending the swingarm in slightly with a hammer so it will mount up, or cutting, repositioning, and rewelding as my swingarm was done (see pics)

Good info.  Thanks!  I was curious about the brake cables.

ahhh, I did a brake delete at the same time I did the 450 swingarm. I'm sure the brake cables will need to be longer, I removed mine.

    Re:My Foreman on 31s 2013/05/08 08:01:36 (permalink)
Got this off the honda Foreman forum

    Swing-arm Conversion 450 arm on a 500
    Foreman & Rubicon

98 to 04 450 arm and drive shaft, the 450 arm
is 2 1/2" longer then the 500 arm the u-joints
are the same so you can use your stock u-joint
the 450 arm is about 1/4" wider where it bolts
on between the differential an the brake drum

Pivot Bolts: left side is a 17mm allen bolt
right side is a lock nut on a 17mm allen bolt
this requires a special tool to remove
some use a steel punch to remove the lock nut
which can mess-up the lock nut and if you hit
wrong can also mess-up the treads, be very
careful doing this, I made a tool to do this

Pivot bearings: there are to different part #'s
on these bearings this does not make a difference
1 set of bearings are ball & the other set are needle
    bearings they will both work

Swing-arm: where the arm bolts up to the differential
the O-ring on the 450 arm is smaller then the 500
when you take the 500 arm off the O-ring should stay
on the differential leave it on there and the 450 arm
the O-ring should still be on it as well use them both
this will make for a tighter seal

450 to 500 rear-end mounting: loosen the right side
alxe tube from the differential, do not take these nuts
all the way off, where the arm bolts to the tube by the
brake drum, you will take a hammer and slightly bend
the tab to the right, this will give it an angle/taper
this will help on mounting the 450 arm on the 500 rear-end
it's still a tight fit, once you get it together place the
bolts in the bent tab and snug them up as well as the nuts
    on the differential

Shocks/Lift: some cut the top of the shock off and take a
piece of pipe and weld it to the shock to extend it to makeup
for the the difference in the arm's but this puts your shocks
at a bad angle and will make it ride like a tank
I designed my on lift to move the bottom of the shocks forward
which makes for a nice ride

    Torque Specs: Pivot Bolts
    left side 83 ft lbs
right side 3 to 7 ft lbs
right side lock nut 83 ft lbs
