How to make PVC catch can
-
Monday, March 30, 2009 6:35 AM

I am too lazy to go order the John Deer of YFZ catch can. I decided to make one out of PVC after looking at the John Deer one. It is simple enough and can be made vary cheap. I went with brass fittings on the catch can itself only because I couldn't find plastic ones. Sorry for the poor quality cell phone pics. I'll snap some actuall pics of it installed tomorrow sometime. I am going to use an actual camera. I mounted it up behind my radiator on my front rack. It looks pretty good. I sprayed it with bed liner. I did some long wheelies to see if it was working and I could actually see the oil flowing through the lines (clear braided hose). May not be the best looking thing but it works. I used 1.5" PVC. Its pretty self explainitory. Holes were drilled and tapped. I but one of those mini k&n filters directly on the top of it to keep the dust out. Valve cover drilled and tapped. When threading in the fitting be sure not to go down to far as too where the valves will hit it. I did mine flush with the bottom. Fitting with some JB weld. What do you guys think?

i used a bench grinder on my fitting so that i could thread it down tight without it protruding into the rocker arms way, and just used some high temp threadlock, worked perfect.

No real reason why I didn't other than I didn't see any real gain by doing so. Plus the little filter on the end adds for major cool points! LOL I got the fittings for around $1.25 each. Not too bad. I had the PVC laying around. I did have to buy a drill bit but I already had the tap. It works for me.

I personally thing the JB Weld is a HORRIBLE IDEA .... JB weld sticks great sure..... but take a propane torch to it and see what happens... JB Weld cracks and flakes off with heat

Excuse the ignorance, but what do you use the catch can for?

The way the crank case is on the brute whenever you do wheelies or WOT runs it will puke oil into the airbox. When doing wheelies it will also starve the front cylinder of oil and has been known to cause spun rod bearings. By running a catch can you can take all that oil that would normally be puked into the air box and redirect it back into the motor. I chose to tap into the valve cap on the front cylinder so the oil goes back to it. The oil stays in the motor where it is supposed to and the front cylinder stays nice and wet!

Nice job on the catch can! I used JB weld on mine, its been 6 months and still looks like the day I put it on. I would do this mod to any brute, no matter if you wheelie or not.

Ok guys I am finally around to posting the pics I took that night of the dry fitment. This is before I painted the catch can and secured all the lines down. It was getting really dark so I was starting to get impatient. Anyway I will get some better ones of my final stuff next time I get a chance. I am a little swamped right now. The more I got to thinking about what flynt said with the rear cylinder being closer to the sump the more I wanted to route the return to the rear intake cylinder. Once again excuse the rough pics and no making fun of my getto bike! LOL I was still trying to decide where to mount it at this point. I went with the snorkels in the end because I didn't want to have to cut my plastics any more to have clearence to mount it to the rad bracket. Here is where the return comes back to the rear cylinder. I was worried the battery tray would rub but it clears, barely, but it clears! Another pic of the can up front. Once again guys please excuse the dirty bike but like I said before the can works great and I am able to say I made it myself. All in all I have about $20 in everything minus the drill bit I had to buy. If anyone is worried about doing this on their own I can tell you it is super easy. I am officially out of room on my front rack now though! Feel free to ask any questions!

So you are just hooking up the crank case breather to the catch can then running the can back into the front cylinder? never seen or read about this until just now

Yeah pretty much. I chose the rear cylinder instead because that is closer to the oil sump. Like in my above post the bike will puke oil out of the vent into the air box. Over time this will get your oil level low and starve the front cylinder. By doing this mod you keep that from happening.

Well I tore everything back down again to see how everything was looking. I ended up having to re route the return along side the airbox instead of along the frame. There was a slight dip in the line on the frame that was allowing oil to collect. I re ran it over my ptrap for my snorkel and beside the air box. All is good now.

Yes but only because the sump wouldn't have enough oil to pump into it. You would already be running it low so it wouldn't puke it up. With the catch can you can run the oil at the full mark. So by having it in the rear cylinder it is closer to the oil sump and able to keep pumping it to the front cylinder. At least that is how I understand it.

Nice job on the can. I'm going to do basicly the same to mine just wondering does it matter what valve cover on the front cylinder you hook back into. Thanks for the details, very helpful.

Yes you can just reroute it back to the air box. You have to tap into the intake valve cover.

If I where to do it over I would use 1" PVC. I thought the 1.5" would look better but it is pretty bulky when I look at it. I really like the way the crankcase breather filter looks on it but I am scared about it raining and getting into the motor. I haven't made up my mind if I am going to reroute it back to the air box. I might do it eventually. Everything is working great for me now though. I tested it out pretty good this past weekend doing water wheelies. Its pretty cool watching the oil flow through the lines. You can actually see it work. Its nice to do wheelies and not have the thing smoke like a freight train afterwords.

I doubt it. I can't think of a reason it would need to be. It just needs to be free flowing and allow the crankcase to still vent. I wouldn't make it any shorter though. JMO

Hey Devil dog how is the clear hose holding up? I did your catch can mod while waiting on backordered a-arm bushings and let it run along time on blocks and the clear hose I used (looks like yours) heated up enough to get loose on the fitting and leak a little. Have you had any problems with the hose? Thanks Wade

Nope? I haven't had any issues with it? Did you use the clear braided hose or just the clear hose. The stuff I have gets a little bit more flexible when hot but it was pretty stiff from the get go. I have them clamped down pretty hard.

I tightened it after it heated up, it had loosed a little. Im gonna try that. Im using the clear with the braided hose. Ialso used a "T" instead of the pvc with caps. I used a reducer in each opening if the "T" so I could just screw in the 1/2" fittings. Thanks for the write up it does work.
