Honda 300 Fourtrax vs Honda 350 Fourtrax/Foreman

I'm new to the forums and I'm just wondering which would be a better machine.
Here is what I know:
300:
Ind. front suspension
282cc engine (20 HP ish)
solid rear axle
extremely reliable (from what I hear)
Rear diff problems (lets water in)
limited slip front diff

350:
solid front axle
limited slip front diff
very heavy
supposedly rides like a tank.
also supposedly very reliable

If anyone here has ridden/owns one or both, please let me know what you think. *I do NOT ride HARDCORE mud* I mostly ride woods/trails, snow, and I use my quads for work.

if you're a trail rider you'll get tired of the solid front axle in about 20 minutes of riding,,,,

well both are really reliable, the 350 seem to be tougher and very seldon have problems with rearends, like the 300, both are really good bikes id just like the lil better, not much but lil' better, ride of the 300 they seem to ride a little smoother than the striat axel up front on the 350. the 300's do pretty dang good in the mud, and if stuck they are "for the most part light and easy to get out." bthe 300's have a lack of power when u get up to a taller tire, either would do good for you and last a while. imo these where 2 of the best atv's ever made..

I may not have the biggest or baddest but, i wont stay on the hill!

im working on a 87 foreman 350 right now and its a good machine i got it for free so naturally a little tlc is needed but it had water in everything motor and both differentials and all the brakes but drained water out of motor and diffs and works just fine and motor doesnt smoke at all. but a buddy of mine had a 88 300 2wd and he swamped the thing drug it out finally got it cranked and it ran just fine i dont think he ever drained the water out that i know of but it was a good quad cause it went through alot. but as far as weight the foreman is a heavy quad compared to the 300 but the 350 will go almost anywhere you want to go

    300 = 17ish hp
    350 = 26ish hp

Both are "tanks" as far as reliability goes, but neither is a performance bike or smooth trail machine. I'd give the edge to the 300 for general riding, while the edge goes to the 350 for brute power.

350 is stronger but rides rougher nad handles like crap id go for the 300 if i was you and stick with 25-26" tires.

Hi everyone, thanks for the quick replies. JPs300, are you sure that the 350 puts out almost 10 more hp than the 300?  Also, it seems that the general opinion is to go with the 300? Does the axle on the 350 move "independently" (like on a truck) at all?  I have a 300 Suzuki QuadRunner 4x4, how would the two Hondas compare to that? Again, thanks.

the axles dont seems to move like independent suspention cause there no wiggle room for the axle to move side to side they just move up and down. but the ride is stiff  and the steering is like a long wheel base truck  it takes a acre to turn it around or to turn it period

The 350 just has a straight front axle. It basically just has two swing arms, front and rear. Here is an illustration that shows the swing arms on the 350.

Here's a link to my service manual. Rather than posting a diagram, you can just download the whole service manual.

The swing arm suspension does not allow any independant motion. Both front tires move together, just as both rear tires move together.

Yes, the 350 make close to 10 more hp, it's a pre-emissions 4-valve motor. The 88-91 300's are around 17-18hp, the 92+ are closer to 15-16hp, while the 350's were rated at 25-26.

I've often considered building a link setup for the front of my 350 to allow some flex up front. It's a very solid machine, but its a rough'ish ride and has a huge turning radius.

Thanks everyone. Are there any major problems that you can think of with the 350? Will the suspension and ride compare to a 1986 250 fourtrax? I have one of those and MAN does it ride rough. The front suspension is about 2 inches and does't really move independently, and the rear is so stiff that it barely moves at all!

Anyways, I'm going on thursday to look at a near mint 1990 (Canada, exact same as 1986) 350 with BearClaws and a 4000lb warn winch. Buddy wants $2400
I have never ridden either the 350 or the 300. Do you guys think I should hold out for a 300 instead?

the rear shocks on a foreman are supposed to be adjustable but mine are rusted so they dont adjust but it rides ok nothing like a 06 350 rancher but its better than a solid mount system that the older yamaha 200s had. and i had to pull my 350 foreman to the shop and it was pulling the back of my rancher sideways so its really heavy so just be prepared

i have both. a 94 honda 300 fourtrax 4x4, an a 87 honda 350 foreman/fourtrax 4x4. my 300 was stock except new 26 inch dirt devils, and my 350 was completely stock, we went riding 1 day an the 300 was getin stuck everywhere, the 350 was following huge bruit forces through the mud. bot are very strong and reliable, but the 300s weak point is its rearend, and ive just tore my 3rd rearend up in the 300. so they are both good bikes but the 350 ive never had problems out of it

Only issues we have had with our  '86 350 is the starter. They tend to go but the ebay replacement is $70 and works well.
The fuel pump is also a weak link but again look on ebay they are around $120.(ours still going strong after 25 years) Both items are easily replaced with basic tools.
The 350 is definitely a rough ride but can plow through most anything and is light enough to work it's way out of most situations with a push or lift. A winch is always beneficial.

With the limited slip in the front, when in the mud just give the brake a light grab(continuously) and it will send power to that front wheel not moving and get them both turning. Just a handy hint if you haven't rode one before.
