This has got to be the worst idea ever.  You are not getting any more power, it is just louder so it sounds like there is more torque.

I mean I am no engineer, but this has to be the ugliest, worst designed home made mod you can do to a great machine.

I am with big yellow rancher on this one... I am definately not a negative person, but c'mon, a coffee can??!?!?!  ****.... Oh no wait, how about 2 of them... That'll create double the horsepower.

There has got to be something better for you to do with your time.

I don't want to be a ****, I just don't want ignorant people to be mis-informed and start doing this to their own quads thinking it's a "Power Mod".  Or is it just for looks?  LOL [:D]

regardless of the point wether it will work or not. There is no reason to discourage or show negativity to someone who is trying something different. Ya know, Thinking up ideas and trying new things is how inventions or new technology is discovered. Now i'm not saying he is gonna change the atv world with a coffee can. What i am saying, why discourage someone of trying, when you were learning how to spell your first name your teacher didn't look at you and say "well your stupid cause you coudn't write your name the first time you tried it". So if you have any suggestions or even just want to offer your opinion please do thats what this site is for. However this site is not fore, and i beleive highlifter will probably even agree with me on this, calling people stupid and trying to sway them away from trying new things.

no i hate stupidity... have u seen the guy that has "stupid people shouldn bread" on his profile... i agree 100%.... and how old is this guy with the cofee can idea (if u want to call it that).?

I'm 16, and I've been driving ATVs since I was 6 years old.

Oh, and as for you, XLCat, more backpressure gives ATVs torque, and less bacpressure gives you more horsepower. Maybe when SuperTrapp, HMF, and FMF tells you that, you will believe them.[;)]

And the coffee can idea is not meant for massive gains, it is just to be different, and to have something that no one, or very few people, has. It is also meant to make people laugh, but I guess no one on here has a sense of humor.[;)]

I'm not angry either, just being honest and stating the obvious that others are afraid to express.  I guess if he likes it enough he will keep it regardless of what I say.  In no way am I discouraging innovative ideas, but there are people that spend millions figuring out what works and what doesn't when it comes to performance.... A coffee can is a long shot... Plus look at it.  I am done with my [sm=rant.gif].

You know if you want more torque, they make clutch kits and gear reductions for atv's. I could see me now entering in a mud bog with a coffee can straped to the back. It would be more like a comedy show. Oh well, like someone else said already, whatever floats your boat uhhh.....atv.

I've got a great sense of humour, and I find your coffee can modification quite funny.  Nothing wrong with setting yourself apart from the crowd, don't cha know.

However, HL members have been banned in the past for starting similar threads.  This discussion belongs in the Mud Hole, not in the Honda section.

Wherever it's posted, it is funny.

Adds a little more "snap" to the sound. Plastic cans work, and they do not melt, but the "ping" from the metal can sounds better.[:)]

1. It sounds meaner to the driver, not to everybody else.  It's giving the sound a surface to reverberate forward (toward the rider).
2. As for more power, well try breathing thru a straw and see if you have more energy...
3. The ignorance of "4 strokes need backpressure" needs to be stamped out...

1. Correct, the sound is more for the driver's enjoyment.
2. Wrong, people and engines are two completely different things (one burns food, and the other burns gasoline).
3. If that was true, ATVs would not have mufflers from the factories, and FMF and SuperTrapp would not use disks (for tuning the amount of backpressure) on their mufflers.

OK, this is an exact quote from the SuperTrapp website (on the "technology" page):

"Removing discs decreases the exhaust opening and increases backpressure. This effectively decreases the powerband to create more low-end torque. It also decreases exhaust tone and enriches carburetion.

Adding discs increases the exhaust outlet and decreases back pressure. This widens the powerband at the top end. It also increases exhaust tone and leans out carburetion."
