Crankshaft thread problem

Bought a clutch puller tool and used it to remove primary on sons 2011 canams renegade 500. Well the clutch puller was not made right cause it messed up the threads in the crank to where the bolt will go in just enough to cover the threads on the bolt (which is not much). It appears to be a m12 1.75 thread. At least that but goes right over the bolt and seems like threads right. Started using the tap on crank very easily and I can only get about 1/2 inch in past the park where it’s tapered and then it won’t go anymore. It just starts turning the motor over. I can’t get the crank to stop turning but it almost feels that the tap could be too big but I know I can’t go any smaller and seems like grinding down the outside of the tap would defeat its cutting ability. Need help bad. Just got this and almost done building for son and some stupid puller is trying to ruin it all. Is there a different type of tap that I need? How do I stop it from turning motor over? I dang sure don’t want to snap the tap into the end of the crank.

Man that's a good one. Take the factory bolt and see if you can find a nut for it. Then see if that nut fits your tap. If it's the same pull the plug and feed some rope into the cylinder. Then start tapping again. The rope should hold the motor and not hurt anything.

Yeah I got a nut that fits the bolt but when I put it on the tap I had to use a wrench to help get it threaded first time. It was almost as if the tap was just a hair too thick. Which makes me wonder if that’s why I am only getting so far in. I know it can’t be another size but if the tap was just a little less thick on the ends I feel it might do better but filing down the ends would take the sharpness away. I have read about the rope trick. I was wondering if it had a bolt to stop the crank. Going to call shops today to see what they say. I’d rather have them tap it out but who knows what they might do. Not the brightest shops around me.
