Black Mamba Lite

ive seen tons of talk about the black mamba tires and tons of complaints about their weight. however ive seen little to no talk about the "lite" version. ive heard the 30x8.5(10)x12 weighs around 44-45 pounds from people who have actually weighed them which is still heavy but not that much heavier then other 30" mud tires.

I will be riding 50% deep nasty mud holes and 50% wooded trails with plenty of fun hill climbs so im looking for a tire that will hold up in deep mud pits but also perform decently on the trails. I share these mud holes with lifted trucks and jeeps so the ruts can often be impressive. with what little I know about the black mamba lite tire, it seems like a good choice. im not looking to win races... I just don't want to get stuck a bunch.

what are your thoughts on the black mamba lite?

thank you

IMO there are a lot of better options for a mud/trail tire that are also lighter and more impressive

the big brown truck showed up today with a set of 14" STI HD beadlock wheels with 30x8.5x14 Black Mamba Lite's mounted on them! i got home from work at about 12:30am and by 1:30am my Grizzly was wearing its new shoes. now i haven't seen them in the daylight but all looked pretty good other then one of the wheels was missing a valve stem cap.

i did a couple of very slow laps around my house just to get everything settled in and had a chance to feel what the tires ride like at very slow speeds. i can say the 30" mamba lite's ride smoother then the 26" Zilla's ive got on my Ace at these speeds.

i will post some pictures tomorrow.

god **** this forum is a pain in the **** to upload pictures to! i give up, sorry guys no pictures.

    i did some measurements:

the lugs on the bottom of the tire are 1.2" tall and the lugs on the side of the tire are 0.8" tall. the gap between lugs in the center of the tire is 1.8" (closest point) while the gaps on either side of that center lug (furthest point) are 6".

    thanks for the help!

i did some more riding tonight and i can confirm a few things.

    1. they ride very smooth on hard and soft surfaces. easily better then anything else in its class!
    2. they are made of ridiculously hard rubber and are VERY stiff tires.

when riding over rocking terrain (all terrain in WA is rocky) at 7 PSI you can expect to bounce all over the place. im going to have to air them down to 4-5 PSI to try and soften things up.

Yea interco tires are known to be hard. Hopefully dropping the air and putting some miles on them will help soften up.

Re: Black Mamba Lite 2018/06/25 05:19:21 (permalink)
i finally got a chance to do some serious mudding today! unfortunately the experience was a bit tainted and cut drastically short by trouble with my snorkel set up but i still managed to have a good time.

i went through 4 separate pits with different moisture levels. first pit was just about dried up so the mud was only dangerous if you tried to drive too fast, the machine walked through this nice and easy.

the second pit was basically bottomless peanut butter... i got stuck bad and had to be winched out. the second pit was so bad that i almost couldnt walk out because once your leg went in the strong suction did not want to let you have it back!

the third mud pit was much wetter version of the second hole and suction wasnt an issue so the proper amount of throttle and working the machine got me through! my fat **** got an extra work out as the only way back was through the hole again so it was time for a long break and lots of water after that puppy! a friend of mine actually recorded me coming back through this hole so i may have video at some point.

the fourth hole was half water with nasty ruts under a thick layer of mud. this one actually high centered my vehicle which is impressive considering ive got about 16" of clearance. thankfully the Black Mamba tread pattern works just as good in reverse as it does going forward. i was able to work the machine and throttle in reverse and get myself out of the hole the way i came in. i really think i could have made it through this hole... but the water line kept getting dangerously close to the hole in my snorkel system! my buddy actually tried this hole after me in his turbo razor with 20" of clearance and got high centered as well. unfortunately for him his 32" GBC Grim Reapers werent up to the task of backing him out. it took two Aces winched to each other to provide an anchor for him to pull himself out.

so an overview of the tires:
    - they ride very smooth on all surfaces.
    - the rubber compound is very hard and i would recommend no more then 4 PSI for a comfortable ride.
    - they are extremely heavy and will rob quite a bit of power.
    - the tread pattern does a good job of protecting your side walls from rocks and branches.
    - the tires pull just fine in sand.
    - these tires need some speed to clean mud out. the Grizzly 700 seems to be able to keep them clean but it takes every last bit of power. i would not recommend running them on a smaller machine.
    - the tires work just as well in reverse and they do forward. this is a serious advantage for getting you out of trouble!
    - these tires are probably not aggressive enough if you want to spend all your time in the deep nasty stuff but are great if you want to mix nasty mud with trails and roads.

    a bit of an update,

these tires do really well in the mud and ride smooth on hard pack but... they do not like rocks! unfortunately Washington state is 50/50 dirt and rocks, even our mud is full of rocks. the tires are already getting chewed up after just a couple rides. if I was a betting man id guess you might get 400-500 miles of our trails on these things before they are racing slicks. instead of wearing over smooth like my Maxxis Zilla's these tires tend to lose small pieces and end up looking a bit ragged.

I think on dirt either soft or hard pack these tires would probably be fine as long as you weren't dealing with either large gravel (small gravel should be fine) or big rocks.

sadly ive also run into an issue where I cant find any one to play in the mud with me. so for the moment ive pulled the wheels/tires off the grizzly to keep them in decent shape for mudding. in the meantime I put some 27x9x12 Kenda Bear Claw HTR's on the stock wheels and 1.5" wheel spacers on the rig for trail work.

The reason they are chipping is because they are a very hard rubber. So there's pros and cons with that being said. Here in Louisiana most all of us say interco atv tires wear like iron. Of course we don't nearly have the terrain you have. Most rock we see is a gravel road. Maybe shoot interco an email and let them know and send them some pics.
