*BIG PROBLEMS* 2004 Grizzly 660

I have a 2004 Grizzly 660 and at the end of last year i started having trouble when getting into the throttle on it so ever since then i have cleaned the carb out multiple times, replaced the drive belt with a new one and put a new air box on it. After all this, i put the carb back on the rourwheeler and got the same results, so i took the jet kit out and moved the needle back to stock. Still the same, so I took the head off and sent it off and got it polished and the valves seated, had no bent valves or nothing like that. I put it back on thinking i may have fixed the problem, but not a bit of differnce. I have checked the timing and i feel like i have it right and i have been double checked by a friend. So last week i got it back out and tried to see if i was missing something and the same stuff. I can put the carb on the engine and hook everything up and it will fire up with the choke on and the throttle closed, blocking all air off, but when i push the choke down it starts running raspy and if i hit the throttle any it will bogg the engine down and shut it off instantly. Today i took carb off to try and elimate some problems and i think i eliminated the carb because even when it is off the intake to the engine, i can take my hand and put it over the intake and the motor will turn over but as soon as i lift one finger it will stop turning over and the battery starts straining and whinning and pulls it down big time to where my LCD screen even shuts down! So im at this point and im not sure where to go from here, im at my witts end! Any help or advice on what to look for would be very much appreciated! Thanks yall, Matthew

ok, give us a list of mods for the bike, snorkles, pipe filter, etc
if it was mine I would start by cracking the lid of the gas tank to make sure its not in a vacuum
take the carb off and and verify that the choke is working properly
and if all that is fruitless, then its time to seriously work on timing,
im assuming you have verified that it has good gas, not water and that it has a good spark
    and plug

Part of the issues sound like a clogged slow jet.  ( ie: will run with choke, stumbles when choke is off)  Where are you located?  Go to your local dealer or atv store and order a 45 slow jet.

I have drained the fuel and replaced with new, the spark plug seems to be throwing good fire. The choke has been looked at and is working properly. I have come to conclusion that it may not be in the carb because if i pull the carb off the intake of the engine completely it will not turn the battery over until i put my hand over the boot and shut off all air completely to the engine but if i lift one finger the battery starts struggling and the engine will not turn? so it sounds to me that it may be internal or maybe even electrical? thanks for the help guys! Two different issues going on at the same time.  Your engine was already running,  it just wont run off of choke.  Put a fresh battery in it and REALLY clean the carb and/or replace the pilot jet (slow jet) with a 45.    Enjoy riding your bike this season.

sounds like water in the carb bowl or the tank vent is clogged.   check for water in the bottom of the tank and drain the bowl, take the gas cap off too and give it a try.

I just found this post with a google search, I have a 2004 660 with almost the exact symtoms, the LCD blanking and starter struggling, poor throttle response, no top end etc.  Sorry if this is a Hijack but how would you know if the timing is 180 out? how would it run?   there may be other problems, but sscard's reponse caught my attention.

^^both (all) valves should be closed when timing marks are lined up.

....I had a similar issue with one of my machines and it turned out to be a itty bitty tiny seed stuck in pilot.

Good luck, I'd listen to SSCARD.

if you have a friend that has a 660 , see if he will take his carb off and let you put on your bike and see if it still acts up, if it don't act up and runs fine then you need an new carb . a friend of had the same thing happein to his 660 he had to put a new carb on it to fix it or rebuild it ,but if you rebuild it you may still have the problem  because if you don't replace everything on the carb you have done nothing and why i know this is because we tried rebuilding it frist waste of money and time

if you still have the hose on you tank lid check that. if clear, pull tank and take out the fuel petcock with the 2 phillips head screws and clean tank really well, might wanna get an external filer. take carb and go through that. if still having issues check plug for any type of water/moisture.The reason i say that is....mine is doing the same thing, i have a blown head gasket! Also check your compression.
