Re:BEST PERFORMANCE FOR DIESELS???????? - Friday, March 12, 2010 1:21 AM ( #2 )
Well to begin spartan is only for the 08-10 year trucks with the 6.4 diesel. They are by far the best turner company for the 6.4. the 275 used to be the biggest race tune they made until recently the 310 came out. All the tunes come on a dashdaq that pluges into the truck. U have to pay more for the race 275 and 310 tunes, but well worth it. The new 6.4 is an amazing engine. With only spartan 275 or 310, exhaust, and intake these trucks are puttin down 550-580+ hp all day long on the dyno. And the best part is that the new tranny for the 6.4 can hold 550 all day every day. I too am looking for a diesel and have been doing tons of research on the 6.4. Absolutely amazing performing and looking truck. But im still iffy on the engines. Some say they are puking and havin a few problems. But I think I have finally decided to get one. Hope this helps

I don't know about the new models but a lot of my son's friends have added programmers/injectors and within a year had transmision problems.  Build the transmission to handle your planned HP before you do the engine mods.

6.4s don't get no milage so if your looking for milage look some were else.  If anyone tells you there getting better than 14 on the highway down hill coasting then there full of bs.  The motors will blow up there no bullet proof and they are stilled plagued with injector issues.  The tannys are suppost to be pretty dang stout in them but as with everything you throw that big of a tune on it it will only last so long but maybe longer than oterh brands.  My killer on the ford was no fuel milage and dosen't pull a load as good as others.  I have seen this first hand.

Re:BEST PERFORMANCE FOR DIESELS???????? - Friday, March 12, 2010 12:46 PM ( #6 )
Off the shelf tunes= transmission failure (bully dog, edge, banks) Learned the hard way

Custom Tunes= More Hp, Adjustments to the Transmission to handle extra hp

Just remember when you add an extra 100 hp to a factory tranny it will have issues. Let us know what year model truck your looking at. Information on tunes is endless.

Not the 6.4s the best powerstroke for mpgs would be the 6.0s(17-20)hwy. But they have problems of there own as well but the later the model of 6.0 the better you are.

I wouldnt say dont trust anyone that says they get better than 14 mpg.. It all depends on the truck.  I know the 2wd do pretty decent on fuel milage, 15-18mpgs, but the 4x4s especially with leveling kits get anywhere from 12-15mpg.. and then the diff gears are going to play a factor as well.  if you have 3.55s 3.73s 4.10s,  4.30 or the Godfather 4.88s it adjust your power as far as pulling and fuel mileage.  Now to go as far and say they are junk and blowing engines left and right, that's crap.  I have a 2008 F350 King Ranch Crew Cab 4x4 Dually w/ 4.10s and I get 13mpg.  I have a leveling kit and 315BFGs... I have the Spartan 250 tune and the trans is just fine, No i don't pound the **** out of it, but it wasn't built to take 900ft.lbs of torque everyday safety.   Mine did get a new radiator due to the recall by Ford, but not an ounce of trouble before or since then.. It has 55xxx miles on it.

I didn't say they were junk at all.  They just don't get great milage and for someone to think they can throw a big programmer on it and hammer down is just silly

Re:BEST PERFORMANCE FOR DIESELS???????? - Friday, March 12, 2010 9:44 PM ( #11 )
Well i guess it depends what you conside "GREAT" fuel milage. I have a 2008 f250 with 8" of lift and 38" tires with Spartan tunes and on the 310 tune i get 19 MPG thats pretty GREAT if you ask me. If someone wants a diesel truck and they dont want to have to do lots of turbo upgrades and engine mods the ford 6.4 will make the most power with just a programer of any diesel truck out there......

No truck out there will get you in to the 12's without some money. The biggest issue with any truck with enough power to get into the 12's is going to be the tranny. Fords i know of to many people with blown motors to buy one. Chevy/ Gmc also have there problems but not as bad as fords, just depends on what year. And the Duramax will get better milage than any Diesel TRUCK on the road, Thats a fact not an opinion. Any newer Diesel 08 an up get crap for milage Stock, but a simple tune and DPF delete will help that. And i two find it hard to believe an 08 F250 with 38's gets 19, maybe according to the DIC. I dont know of a single F250 that gets over 15 with a tune or stock, Unless its being pulled by something.

Milage is overated. My dodge get an amazing 14.5 MPG around town and 17 MPG on the highway, but then agian it will burn your eyes while its idlein. I guess a 450hp truck just likes fuel.

Ya you gotta spend some money about 2500....This is rite off of spartans website......We currently hold the record for the 6.4L Powerstroke in both fastest 1/4Mile track time (12.52 @ 109.00mph) and highest confirmed dyno numbers on #2 Fuel Only (567RWHP) and on nitrous oxide (617RWHP). We've accomplished this without breaking a single hardware component on a single vehicle- our test trucks and customer vehicles included. Thats on the 275 tune not the 310 their website hasnt been updated..... O and you now know of an f250 on 38s that gets more than 15. Well on the highway anyway about 14 around town....lol Go on Spartans website and talk to Matt (the owner) if you want to argue......

i don't have to talk to matt.  I have a friend with a spartan tuned truck.  I know all bout them.  Also there drag truck is a reg cab and the suspension is modified.  As far as component not breaking bs spartan tuned truck just got out of the shop bout 2 weeks ago 5 injectors went bad.  Melted 2 psitons.  Only gets bout 14 on highway.  Is on stock wheels and tires.  Got beat by a brand new bone stock 2010 cummins both pulling race cars on trailers evertime they hit a hill ford would fall behine bout mile.  These are facts.

Well I know when my 7.3 was on 20s with 37s I got about 17 mpgs on the hwy as long as I kept it under 2 grand. With it beeing factory suspension with 315 km2 on it I really cant tell much of a difference on mpgs.

I have always heard the 6.0 getting better milage than the 7.3s. But thats not what I was going for when I bought a powerstroke.

Re:BEST PERFORMANCE FOR DIESELS???????? - Monday, March 15, 2010 2:58 PM ( #27 )
The only reason the 6.4 get bad milage is the emissions and the DPF if you take that off its completly differant. Also diesel are made to work under load so the mileage wont go down alot wile pulling a trailer like a gas engine will. Having larger tire also puts a load on the truck it acts like a small trailer. So just because you put larger tires on your mileage wont go down if you drivew sanely. Actually if you have larger tires they are larger diameter so on the hwy your rpms are lower resulting in better milage. If someone wanted a truck with 38s on it do you really think they care about milage if they did they would drive a smart car... Its just a benifit go get 19 on the hwy if my truck got 3 mpg i would still drive it and still love it because i like lifted trucks. No Spartan cant make you have the fasted truck on the road but for most guys they just want alittle extra power and still keep the reiability..

Re:BEST PERFORMANCE FOR DIESELS???????? - Monday, March 15, 2010 5:12 PM ( #28 )
if you want an awesome diesel get the new 08-10 ford superduty, if its in your budget. i don't care what anybody says the 6.4 powerstroke is the baddest truck out right now, if your gonna take the emission crap off of it. and as of right now the most dependable and best fuel economy. the 6.4 has more then proven itself. i have an 06 6.0 f-250 and with a mild tune on 35'' tires i get 16mpg around town (and that is hand calculated) the 6.4's that i have done custom tunes on weather its sct or spartan and a dpf delete kit get consistant 6-8 mpg gains. this is coming from someone that does this everyday not just joe smoe who read it out of a magazine or off the internet. i have yet to have a customer come back and complain that they have'nt gotten thier moneys worth and instead of wanting to burn the truck to the ground they now say they'll own them till the wheels fall off. goodluck in whatever you decide to do but i can promise if i could afford it i'd have a 6.4 in my driveway.
