Anyone use hose clamps on cv boots?

Recently ive had to repair a number of cv joints and the cv boot clamps just never seem to want to stay on.They just seem to leak grease all over the place.
I picked up a few 7/8 hose clamps and put a few of them together and used them on the inboard cv joints.I used 3 clamps and put them together to make one large clamp, reason being i used 3 clamps instead of one large clamp is because the smaller clamps are narrower and actually fit in the grooves of the cv boot.
Has anyone else used hose clamps as an alternative to regular cv boot bands? How are they holding up?Any unforseen problems im missing using the hose clamps? Thanks

They work good for the most part but I have had troubles once when I was riding in a weedy/grassy swamp and the clamp tends to grab alot of weeds and it can rip the clamp right off.

Have used a zip tie as a temp fix and I think the guy has been running it like that for a month now.

Well what i did was put the clamps on,then cover the screw part of the hose clamp with silicone so that it is smoother and not to catch onto anything.

Mechanically hose clamps are quite strong enough.  Terribly prone to snagging on things though, which is not a good thing.

Mechanical strength is not really an issue.  Zip ties are more than strong enough to hold the boot.  Trouble is it's kind of tough to tell which ones will stand the elements without getting brittle and snapping.

If stock clamps are not getting the job done, there's almost always one of two things going on.  Either the boot and the band are not lined up to and seated in the grooves in the axle, or there's grease on the axle or boot where the clamp goes.  If you've got grease under it, it's never gonna stay.  Keep it surgically clean when you put it together, and the stock type bands, or the replacement type bands work awesome and hold stronger than the boot, with minimal to no snagging depending on the type you get.
And yes, it does certainly take some care and dilligence to keep the surfaces that clean.  That's what makes the biggest difference though, not the clamps themselves.

I use this kit.  Last I knew Napa still had it, but I havn't done business with them in several years.

Home depot sells stainless steel zip ties. I've been using those on the last several boots I worked on. No issues yet.

I run big lifts on my fourwheelers. My axles are in as much as a bind as they can get and i use hose clamps and zip ties. Whatever i can find lol. Sometimes the zip ties will break and sometimes the hose clamps will get caught on something and come off but i usually dont have any problems with them. I do just check my boots every so often just to make sure everythings ok. But zip ties and hose clamps are WAYYY better than fighting with the stock style clamps. I HATE those things with a passion.

over sized black zip ties are all i use. install them and pull them tight with vice grips.

remember, the clamping force can be as tight as a ducks arse, but its no good unless you clean the grease from the O.D. of the cup first. i use brakleen on a shop rag.

Thanks guys.Ive just been being cheap.Ive always used the crimp style bands.I guess im gonna have to invest in the special band tool so i can use the better style bands.Im gonna leave my hose clamps on and seen how they hold up for a while.

I use zip ties sometimes when I'm out of bands now, but I bought a banding tool a while back so now I usu just buy the $1 cv bands from Gorilla whenever I place an order and they work very well.  I don't think I've ever cleaned the grease from underneath a boot
