AR-15 HELP!

Ok I just bought at Smith&Wesson M&P15 tonight from the local gun store.... well I got a great deal and he was the only dealer that had the sport model which I wanted. Before he ordered the gun he made me aware that it was a California compliant model and would only come with a ten round magazine... I figured no big deal Im gonna buy 4-5 before its all over. So heres my problem..I got the gun in my hands tonight and in order to release the magazine it requires you to have a key to depress the button inside a shell if you will. Does anyone know what I can do to have a normal functioning mag. release? can i buy the normal one that comes on the other models? or is there a kit? sorry its so much to read and thanks in advance.

There is a bullet button(what the product is called) around my mag release button to prevent me from just hitting the button to drop the mag i have to put something as small as an 1/8" to release the mag

all ar15's are built to mil spec, except for models like you have.  i have built 3 ar's.  if you can either post or pm me pics.  i am about 90% sure you can replace the release only and be in business.  maybe $20-$40.  check essintial arms co or model 1 sales for parts.

Not all ARs are built to mil spec.  Thats the most over used term in the AR world.

The sport has a mil spec bolt, ramp, extension tube.... And even if its not, why is that good or bad?  We all know the military gets the cheapest thing they can buy.  S&W backs the gun with a lifetime warranty.

I think this is the part you need.

They are easy to swap and cheap.  You *should* be able to push on the mag release button and unscrew the release on the other side.  I think you will need a new button, mag release?, and spring.

ETA you should be able to get it all for under $15 from Midway USA unless you want the fancy ambidextrious stuff.

**** does that mean.  he wants to know how to make the mag release work.  ok so 100% is not mil spec but if it is not mil spec then why will any other mag release work?  it has more to do with interchangability than quality.

Here's what you said 'all ar15's are built to mil spec, except for models like you have.' I took that as you taking cheap shot on his gun.  So many people are slamming the MP sport but the only ones slamming it are the ones who dont have it.  Or the ones who have a pile of money in one.   They just cant accept the fact that you can get a good gun for $599.

Just replace the mag release with a standard one. You can find a video on you tube to walk you through the two step process.

There is no such thing as a "Mil-Spec" sporting AR15 rifle, let us clear that up right here and now.

There are Sporting AR-15 type rifles that have been built close to Mil-Spec standards but without the three position happy switch and M16A1/A2 internals and specific markings demanded by the Government contract, the rifle never can be, and never will be, truely "Mil-Spec."

Milspec - adopted and used by the Military. I.E Colt and F N 's.

    Commercial - everyone else.

I would not call Colt and F N the cheapest? There is nothing in that commercial rifle that is mil-spec but like you said that is not a bad thing. There are hundreds of great commercial rifles on the market.

My point about the govt and getting the cheapest is they do give the business to the lowest bid alot of times.  Just bc Colt was charging say, $1200 doesnt mean they werent making it for $500 or enough $1100.  I dont know. I do know there are alot of vets from the mid to late 60s that will not to this day own a Colt bc of the problems with the M16.

That is because they were ignorant and did not know how to maintain it in the jungle environment. Does not matter who made the gun they are all serviced the same.

This video should help.  Its real easy to uninstall the Bullet Button and just swap it out like FF162BFD said.  Order a normal Mag release/catch button from PSA or any of the sites listed above.

I find Cheaper Than Dirts AR 15 Build series to be very helpful.
