99 Polaris 500 stuck in low, cant shift

I just bought a 99 polaris 500 and I test drove it before I bought it and it was running and shifting fine, next day went to pick up and got it loaded into back of truck just fine and it was shifting in all gears just fine, got it home and it wont go to neutral, high or reverse. It seems like its stuck in low at all times, moved the shifter in the neutral position and started motor and hit throttle and it still was in drive. I adjusted idle, what can it be?

clutches maybe out of alignment maybe have play in the linkage mine does that when it is time to change the belt you may have damage to the sheves of your clutches there maybe damage inside the transmission you may have a broken motor mount i would start with the easiest stuff to look at first and go from there

Could water get in the transmission case and cause it to not shift? If so, where is the drain plug?

i had the same problem, check the shifter and hopefully thats it, otherwise your going to b e rebuilding a transmission or paying to have one rebuilt. i thing mine was estimated a $1000 to rebuild the transmission at a dealer.

Its very common on a older sportsmans.  The shifter gets wear in it and will try to hang between two gears.  Usually a little pulling on the linkage or a pry bar to pop one of the rails back into position will have you going again.

Could it just be a bad belt? I pulled the clutch cover off and I took the belt off with little to no effort. Is it supposed to be that easy? I also put it back on with no effort.

You might as well go ahead and put a belt on it while its tore down..   Did you look at the linkage and the shifter?

i would put the new belt on and see if that works before i rebuilt the clutchs my clutch was cracked from years of hard ridin and it cost me over 400 dollars for a new one and it is goin to cost some where between 300 and 350 to rebuild it i wouldnt mess with the rebuilding it if i didnt have to it was a pain in my butt to get it off just in case you didnt know if u squeeze the belt between the primary and secondary clutches it will loosen the belt up and it makes it easier to get it on and off
