93 yamaha big bear 350 rear diff

gentlemen,
i am new to this forum and would greatly appreciate your help/experience. as stated in the subject line, i have a 93 yamaha big bear 350 (bone stock) bought for a song in tn.  I moved to nc. in 2007 and having no place to store my toys (74 cj5 and 93 bb) i took them to my in-laws for safe keeping. 6 months later my wife's nephew reluctantly informs me that the rear diff of my atv is tore up. he doesn't know a thing about an atv, but he proceeds to tear mine down. I am going up in december to get my toys, before anything else bad can happen. my question is what is the most likely failure in the rear diff and ballpark figure for repair/replacement.

it really depends on what it was doing before he tore it down it could be a few different things or one thing.the gears could be chewed up,the axle could be stripped.thats the main 2 things that go out in a rear end.both can be fixed for a little bit of nothing if you shop smart.this is a pretty good site to find parts, but you'd be better getting used parts off ebay.

yea I just had my axle go out on a 96 Kodiak...got a rear diff for 150 and an axle for 120....I could have just repaced the rng and pinions gears but they are just as expensive to replace as buying a used diff...but good luck with it all!

ring and pinion or worn out axle splines or both. That model is not that cheap to find parts for. You will be able to use the 88-95 but they can sometimes be hard to find. I looked and didn't see any on ebay. If the stuff is bad your only real option is to be patient and wait for good used parts. The rear axle and diff for those new will cost you probably upwards of $1000. The axle alone on bikebandit.com is $643 and thy don't show that they still carry  the rear diff.

I part bikes out on the side and have between 40-50 bikes on average. Feel free to ask me about parts if you need something.

i'm thinking the kodiaks from early 90's-'99 have the same rear ends as the old big bear before '96.

No actually they don't. They have the same as the 96+ big bear. The Kodiak started in 93 I know the 96 plus have the same as the 96 plus biug bear and from what I can tell and the 94 that I have parted out the 93-95 have the same axle and diff is the 96+

Knock the threads thru the diff. The nuts are ther to hold it from going through the diff. Should be a big washer also?
