2013 ATV Manufacturer horsepower ratings

I've listed them in decreasing order, and included the KW to HP conversions.  I've only listed the flagship models (and most popular) from most manufacturers.

Things to give a more complete reality:
 - curb weights
 - drive train efficiency
 - RWHP

Things that are interesting:
- The Polaris HO added almost 10% more HP from the previous year (usually the case with their high output models).
- The top 2 contenders for HP  (Can-Am 1000XT and the Sportsman XP HO) are 125cc's apart, but only about 5 HP apart.  Makes me wonder if the XP is tapped out or the Can-Am is detuned...
- The single cylinder Suzuki King Quad is comparable to twins of the same or more CC's.
-  Arctic Cat detunes their standard 700 H1's compared to the TBX and Mud Pro editions.
-  The Sportsman 550 is leading the mid-size class (400-600), but not by much.  Incidentally, the Sportsman 500 (based off a 20 year old Fiji engine) is still holding it's ground.

Things that aren't interesting:
- Honda's are bringing up the rear.

I thought you guys would find this interesting.  I have an excel spreadsheet for this current year, I'll make an attempt to upload it if you want to sort by measures other than HP.  You can check my math and critique where needed.

I could do that easily... if someone has the weights readily available?

I'm sure the Can-Am will still be the top contender, though.

A think most of these engines are detuned...  CC's aren't always directly correlated to HP, but there is some linear relation there.

    106 in the RS's, 100 in the RT's.
BUT they are not the same motor. diff bore/stroke, diff cams. same design, but completely different setup. the spyders are designed to rev higher and a much diff powerband.

The King Quad has always been a solid HP contender for a single cylinder.   AC makes decent single cylinder motors as well.

The 500 Can-am isn't quite as popular as their other offerings, so I just left it out.  Based on my information, the 500 bombardier/Can-am motor puts out 34 kw... 45.6 HP!   That's nearly 70% more than the Honda Foreman 500, and as much as the Kawi 650 Vtwin!

Another thing worth noting is that the 650 Can-Am is on par with many 750+ machines.   Crazy power for a "mid" class.   The Can-ams are where the power is.

    Per EPA's emission regulations/standards.

Most people use them as they are a non biased source, and when manufacturers do list HP ratings, they are usually really close to the EPA numbers.

The 2013's have been out a month or so now, figured I would post them.  If you want to know about a specific model, just PM me and I can see if I can dig it up.  Or I can post it here.

Just waiting on people to get me the weights.

The problem is that some manufacturers list curb weight, others dry weight.

I would like to see the RWHP #'s.  If you can't get it from the crank to the wheels effeciently, it does you no good.  The amount of HP at the rear wheels and how much gets to the ground combined with the overall weight of the vehicle is what tells the tale.  For example, all things equal, the Yamaha 550 will beat the Polaris 550 by a very slim margin in a 300 ft drag race.  By contrast, despite the HP disadvantage, both of them will out accelerate and beat the Can-Am 500 consistantly in the same drag race because of power to weight ratio and a more effecient power delivery.

does a polaris 550 really beat  a can am 500? 5 more horse and weigh less right? i wouldnt mind seeing a race. Its crazy to see the 500 would almost take out the 700's in every manufacturer.

Correct me if I am wrong but you stated the Polaris 850XP HO added 10% more power for '13.  I believe they actually added 10% (7HP) in 2012 going from 70 in 2011 to 77 in 2012 & if 20113 is 77HP it did not change for '13.

    turbocoupe88,

I'm not sure on the torque numbers, but I agree they are a better indicator of what we do with these machines.  However, HP has a positive correlation to tire turning ability as well.

    Dr. Matt,

I could be wrong, maybe it was the 2012 models.

Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Generally from my days of drag racing we would tell guys that torque gets you moving and hp keeps you moving thus your high tq vehicles generally do great off the line and your high hp vehicles have a higher top speed/trap speed.
Another figure that I would like to see is where in the powerband peak hp is made. The rotax motors are awesome at making big power because they continue to pull and the peak hp is obtained very near the rev limiter where some v-twins make peak hp lower in the powerband and thus start a slow decline in hp up to the shift point/rev limiter.
