I have viewed an abnormally large amount of fuel pump failures lately on 09-10 Can-Ams. Units that have the gas tank vent routed up and some that don't. Reading on here quite a bit. I read about guys putting a layer of grease on the fuel tank threads to help prevent water intrusion into the fuel tank. Some guys on here are on their 3 fuel pump. Well the gas tank cap o-ring on all the f 'ered fuel pumps is not seated properly in the cap. I think, but haven proven that this is letting in water, sand and slit into the fuel, damaging the fuel pump, even with the fuel tanl vent routed up. Where else can it come in? I am going to put another o-ring piggy backed on the factory cap o-ring and see if this fixes the issue. Might have to put one in every unit that comes throught the shop now and put one in every mud/water bike from now on....

Yeah I have an 09...recently had a pump failure...due to lots of water, sand in the tank....I checked everything, only way it could have gotten in was through the cap.   I filled mine up, and put silicone on the cap last time I rode and had no issues, I like the idea of the second o ring..that may fix the issue.

Maybe just replacing the original o-ring with a larger diameter one.  I'm no expert, but I know when you change your oil on a car and your old oil filter o-ring stays stuck on and you don't check and put the new filter on with it (2 o-rings), then it leaks pretty bad.  I know I'm talking about a pressurized system, but still.

I don't think the dual o-rings are going to work personally... mainly for the reason lugnut mentioned.

I have put a liberal amount of die-electric grease around the sealing ring on my fuel pump nut and on my fuel cap itself and mine is fine now.

Whats FUBAR is can am won't fix the problem.

Gimme a break. There's a simple solution: don't submerge your machine. Can Am didn't put snorkels on the machine either....I guess sealing the fuel cap is something that needs to be added to the list of mods when you intend to go deep.

so can am didnt KNOW that these bikes would get submerged when they built them?!?

IF I recall correctly you could get a "GORILLA EDITION" bike in 2007.... so when they sent a bike to gorilla to get modded they didnt expect the bikes to get submerged?

QUOTE EDITED OUT FOR PERSONAL ATTACKS.

Screw you, cousin-lover. You must be another braniac that thinks BRP should put a team of engineers on the fuel cap  "problem" that reveals itself when modded machines are submerged in conditions never intended by the manufacturer. This is the same fuel cap that has been on snow machines for over a decade....when it's overtightened, it will start to leak.

What's this then? HHHMMMMM

you have mud tires AND SNORKELS listed on your bike in your signature... so what is your bike snorkeled for?    I take it just for looks?  I guess you go around ALL mud holes when your out riding?

I don't whine "Whats FUBAR is can am won't fix the problem" when something goes wrong that I caused.

I wonder if the X-MR has a different cap design....since it seems to be designed to go in deep water

who said I was whining????

I don't care, yeah I'de surely like to not have to worry about something going wrong and popping a motor

You will get yourself in a bind one day and fall off in something and fill your tank up with water... and it could very well kill your motor... lets see who is whining then!

Re:2009-2010 OL/Ren owners read this - Thursday, July 29, 2010 8:57 PM ( #15 )
dont the 08- use the same spout/cap design.?....I was starting to think mabey its the other o-ring,under the large plastic spanner nut.....i noticed that it has a good seal between the pump body, and the top lip of the opening, but also noticed that where it seals around the sides/walls of the opening that it dosent sit right....theres tabs on the o-ring,which im thinking need to be"trimmed",on mine anyways,@ the pump opening, theres a lip abot 1/16 thick,on the o-ring theres tabs aprox 1/16 from the o-ring face....well the 1/16 lip on the opening,is about 3/16 on the opposite side!??!the tabs on the o-ring dont reach...
its hard for me to explain, ive got it off now,and ill take some pics later to better explain, lol

Oh,also where the electrical wires run through the pump body, theres an opening there too.....
jmo.......ill post some pics if i get a chance

Oh,one more thing...,wondering about ur opinions....how about really rough trail riding with, say a 1/4 tank or less...Do u think its hard on the pump running(very brieflef)dry from fuel sloshing, and mabey (very briefley)cavitating the pump over and over...??
anyways those r my thoughts as,i dont think im gettingg debris/water past my cap seal....

KC you should be good man.  I havent heard of any 07s having problems, now you may want to check the fuel filter periodically though.

nwt... I also dielectric greased the o-ring around the fuel pump cap also on my bike.  now I don't know for sure that mine is sealed, I am gunna take a fuel sample when I get in, but I did install an inline clear filter on my bike and its clean.

it could be possible that running the pump dry would hurt it... but I wouldnt see it getting hot enough to hurt it really

Re:2009-2010 OL/Ren owners read this - Friday, July 30, 2010 1:12 AM ( #18 )

^^ thanx....yeah,i put an inline filter on mine too...and right after it i put a psi test port for fast readings....made my fuel pump t.s a lot easier too, lol, and good to check frequently...even a coupple psi loss could mean alot!!
I still say its best to keep the tank full as posible as much as posible....electric fuel pumps run constantly, and rely on the fuel to lubricate, and cool the pump, and when riding for hours and hours, that fuel is pretty **** warm!!ive drained mine before(after a LONGGG ride) and couldnt beleive how hot it was......

anyways, heres some pics of what i was talking about.....
Pic1-shows the o-ring with the 4 tabs.....
Pic2-shows one side of the opening(the side that the tabs on the o-ring fit tight)
Pic3-shows the other side of the opening wich is wayyyy thicker....I cant even get the tabs close, even byy pressing HARD on the oring face....waayyy off!!
Pic4.....im gonna silicone that....it moves a bit,and the oring looks dry and has small cracks in it......
and for anyone wondering, the big plastic nut should be 21ft/lbs,so maker tight if u take it off an aint got the tool!!(that may have been my problem...?)
