2008 Grizzly 700 Engine Blown

Its not totally blown, but it is being rebuilt. It started smoking and the smoke was mostly white. I took it to my local yamaha shop for diagnosis and repair. they tell me that the top end is gone and that there is a little play in the piston rod, and it's up to me wehter or not to replace bottom end while the top end definitely needs repair. The top end will run $1106 parts and labor and the bottom end will run $1190 parts and labor. I told them to rebuil the whole thing, I hope I did the right thing, that is alot of money for an engine with only e few hours on it. According to the mechanic he thinks it was a dry air filter that did this damage. If that is the case I want something other than stock because air filters that do this suck! Basically $2400 for repairs, but should be like new. I asked what a whole new engine costs and he told me they dont sell entire engines, just parts. Not sure if that was a lie or not, but the dealer charges $60 an hour, and they sell parts so that is where I am now. Is this reasonable, or should I bust up in there and take the grizz down the road?

I never thought I could do it myself, but with the right tools, a good manual and a garage, you can do it.  Everyone on here has just about rebuilt one a time or two and can help.  I would just rebuild the top if everything else was ok.  You could do this for 400-500 bucks.  That would include new piston, rings, gasket set and machining.  You dont need much more than that.  All depends on if your trying to get it done before a big ride, time and money.

Your only strickened by the thickness of your wallet!

thanks for the help guys. I run a small business that requires alot of my time, more than I want to give. With a new baby at home its hard to make time to do a major undertaking like this with very little knowledge of an engine internals. I have a 2002 Grizzly 660 thats in fairly good shape, that I never ride. I figure that I can either sell it for $2500 or trade it in on the repairs to keep from having to come out of pocket that much coin. It sucks and I feel like the top end rebuild alone would be sufficient but on the other hand I use the machine for a work, or business. I put about 1,200 miles a year on the quad, and I plan on keeping it a while. Thats why I told them to proceed with the full rebuild. I hope that I made the right decision.

Well if it is a NEW quad and IF you havent messed with the air filter what so ever why would you have to pay for it did you buy it like that from the dealer? Or have you cleaned the airfilter and forget to oil it?

Im going to agree with this
whats the mileage on the machine, a dry filter will let a little grit through but enough to torch the top end
and if thats what caused it was a little grit, then just rebuild the top end not the bottom
thats my opinion, and I split bikes on a regular basis, unfortunately
now if mud got in the oil thats another story for sure

The machine has about 2,000 miles on it. I use it for work, I use it in really dusty conditions I would say. I do soil sampling and GPS land measuring. The land we work is beach sand and always harrowed or plowed. I had never changed the original filter and been cleaning it myself. I dont like what the dealer told me at all. Its not the dealer I bought the quad from either. I wasnt going to rebuid the bottom end but I was afraid not to with all the time it has taken to get this figured out. They had it for 2 weeks before they touched it. I dont have time to do the work myself and there are no qualified mechanics close by other than the dealer.  I am going to put an intake kit in this when I get it back probably, do any of you have a different intake on yours?

I'd send it to an engine builder and go ahead and put some goodies in there.  If your rebuilding it, you might as well make it worth while!

I had my grizz done by Turner with a high comp piston and some other tweaks for 900 out the door. And that was with a 90 day warranty I think. It had a warranty just don't remember how long it was  but didn't need it anyways. That was 3 years ago and thing still runs great.

My original dealer is 7 hrs away in mississippi. a little far. believe it or not, this is the low bid in these parts. this dealer charges $60/hr, while the closest competition charges $100/hr., i'm in the wrong biz! I live in extreme southwest GA and good mechanics must have left here! I would like to get it repaired cheaper and get more power, but it sucks cause the dealer already has the quad and has started working on it. they have the top end torn down and ordered parts already. Does Yamaha have a recommmended hours of repair for this type of work. I ask so I can reference this against their rates. Beasley Honda in Ozark, AL has the bike now, and has had it for 3 weeks. I went to them because of a good reference but I am begining to doubt that. They said the air filter was dry and let dust through! I have a Pro Design cone conversion with a K&N and Filter wrap on my Rhino, would this be a good setup on the grizz. Frankly it scares me to run a foam filter since this BS happened. I know that a foam filter will catch more dirt and dust than a regular K&N but with the pre filter I'm not sure which is better.

now to make things worse than before, i now have a screwed up clutch. there was some noise coming from the clutch but i thought it was the oil pump being as the engine was near blown. the clutch was making some bad noise. they said that there was a rock inside there and it had eaten up the secondary and primary pulleys. and that the belt was being shredded. also i dont want to leave out that the bill for the repair for this would be $800, I told them if they touched it I would kill them. Fix the engine and let me have that POS back. I pretty much have figured out when, where, and how I did this damage to thi machine, though very unsure how a rock could get into the clutch housing. I do alot of GPS land measuring, and I was measuring a potato field about the week of my initial problems. The potatoes are buried under a hill that was scrubbung the bottom of the quad while I was straddleing it, and running very fast while perimetering the field. The land was extremely dry and dusty, and very sandy. is there any way I could fix this crap myself? I have had enough of this crap. I just repaired both front ball joints, and a wheel bearing on a brand new Chevy Silverado with only 50,000 miles on it. This is getting ridiculous.

Yes, you can pull both pulleys your self...Just make sure you have a impact wrench to do so...You can go to Grizzhopper.com to get the info on how to take the clutch apart.  It says  for a 660 but its the same as the 700.  I just had my clutch taken apart a couple of weeks ago. I will be taken it apart again to clean out all the mud thats in it from a recent lay over in the mud...LOL

thats odd that the pulleys were damaged by a rock
im calling bs on that, how would it bounce around enough to contact the pulleys more than every once in a while
you need to get your hands back on it and then let us know what you find when you take it apart, there are plenty of guys on here, myself included that can talk you through a clutch and top end, its not as hard as it sounds
the clutch has some expensive parts in it, but 800 isnt changing those parts, thats just some seals and a belt, and maybe a clean up
yamaha charges around 1100 for a primary sheave and clutch pad, thats the expensive part
the top end can be done by you for around 300, thats a new piston, rings, top end gasket set and machine work
I would think if you do it yourself like I said above your looking at around 900 for the hole project

thanks sscard. i may need some help on this pulley problem. i think that they said that the secondary pulley was tthe one with damage. i am not sure how the rock got into the assembly. as for the engine, it was mainly the top end, but they said that the bottom end had some play in the piston rod, they didnt want to repair it but i told them to go ahead and do it because i felt like there could be a problem due to the forementioned conditions. i bought the atv at lake hill motors while i was at a meeting close by. i got the quad for 6299 OTD but now it looks like i am spending some coin to fix the pile!
