2001 Big Bear hard shifting

My Brother just bought a 2001 big bear 400 and it is quite hard to shift from rev to nuetral or forward.  Just wanted to hear from you guys if this is a common problem or if there is linkage that needs to be adjusted, lubed, or if were just doing somthing wrong.  Some times u can move the lever out of reverse but it stays in gear.  This is the hand shifter not the foot.  Its also called a profesional series does anyone know what that means?  Any help would be awsome.

I don't have the same year/setup as the bike you're talking about, but mine goes into reverse just fine, but is picky about shifting 'out' of reverse.  It goes in easily, but it seems as if you have to have slack in the drivetrain in order for it to shift.  What I mean is, you sort of have to back up in a straight line, let off the gas and shift it right as it comes to a stop.

I have the same problem with my 2010 BB400, I have to sometimes either rock the 4wheeler with body weight while shifting out or I have to reverse just a little bit more while trying to shift out.  Also, I've noticed with mine that sometimes when I shift out of reverse, it shifts to neutral and sometimes it shifts straight to first, even if I always go from neutral to reverse.
