07 Rancher 400 AT Shifting issues

My brother is having problems with his Rancher shifting from forward to reverse and i need some ideas of what it could be. It will drive perfectly normal in all 5 gears and it will even drive normally in reverse. The problem is you have to tap on the side of the transmission to get it to go into reverse and the same to get it to go back into drive. We disconnected the cable and checked it and it works normally. The problem feels like something in the transmission is in a bind. We're a little worried about cracking the transmission open. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It will drive fine in both ES and AT. Just have problems shifting with the lever.

It could be a bent shift fork shaft or corrosion on it where it goes through the case making it stick.

We get quite a few in that are seized or starting to seize .. They will corrode/seize where the steel shaft passes thru the aluminum case .. Most we just dis-assemble and clean up with emery cloth .. This customer wanted new parts ..

This was the problem and it was a very easy fix. Ours was not nearly as dirty as the one in the photo but it was frozen solid. Had to heat up the aluminum and use a press to get the shaft out, but after a little cleaning and some grease it works fine. Thanks again for all the help and the photos.
