just run it some sounds like lifter lost it prime. Its common for vortec motors to have lifter noise. Even threw there roller lifters. I would run it some change the oil add some lucas. I bet it will come back to life and go another 100k.

We suspected that, we ran it for probably 5 minutes, but i didn't want to hurt anything. Im afraid to run it much, she's loud.

heck man lifters tapping won't really hurt anything. id change the oil and add the lucas and run it at idle for few mins till it warms up some then take it up to bout 3k or so get some oil pumping good to that top end. Then if it don't stop take top end apart. Thats just my 2 cents but its worked.

Im pretty certain its a lifter, I just want to be certain you know what your talking about before I do what you say. Im sure you get what Im trying to say. No insult meant.

if it not pumped up it will tap for a long long time before it hurts the cam. being its a roller cam and lifter it would take a extremly long time to do damge. Only thing is your loseing lil horepower casue valve is not working exactely the way its suppost to but its no harm really. If you try what i say it will be fine if its still doing it then tear into it. I know alot bout these lsx style motors.

Some of the earlier LS engines had a piston slap. Get this checked out, if the skirting on that piston lets go it will take out the entire block. As I recall they had a TSB on piston slap. If it is a little "tick tick" I think you are alright, anymore than that you need to get it checked out. It could turn a $500 repair into a $4,000+ repair.

The engine has always made the little tick noise, this is different and has never done this before. Im almost certain its a lifter. Chester1, I will try to tinker with it tonight and report back tomorrow.

Chester1, I put 3/4 can of sea foam in the oil last night and let it idle for about 15 minutes or so. No change. Im going to take the valve cover off next chance I get, just don't have any time now. Im sending you a PM.

what the heck? my post didnt show up? anyway... these motors (4.8/5.3/5.7/6.0L)'s are common to develop minor piston slap that sounds like "cackling" and chatter... dont worry about it. its not your lifters. youll be mad as heck when you have to take the heads off to replace the lifters and the noise is still there after you put it back together. almost everyone i know with an LSX motor in their truck(doesnt matter with mileage) has this chatter. unfortunately the only way to get rid of it (if it really bothers you that much) is to replace the engine. and if you go that route, more than likely (if you get a used motor) it will do the same thing. and if you get a "new" motor, it will more than likely develop the noise over time... i dont know what cuases it, but ask anyone at GMFS.com or FSC.com about it... everyones immediate answer is piston slap. unless you have an obvious "clang clang clang" or "thud thud thud"... then you got other things to worry about.

he sent me a video of it. Its not the typical tick tick tick. Its pretty loud at a idle. Loud enuff that it shows up plain as day on a cell phone video.

it is very possible that a lifter crapped out, I've seen em do it in ls engines before... not very common though. BTW piston slap doesnt just arise over night anyway guys, its normally on the number 1 cylinder. never know it could be something as simple as a stock pushrod.... which is a cheap fix!!! if you were closer I have lots of stock lifters and pushrods handy... but you can pick up closer cheaper than shipping would cost! lol IF you do get to that point to where it is a lifter I would recommend going with a set of comp R lifters... I think they are about $180 a set(or used to be) they are pretty much just a stock replacement.... but may end up being cheaper.

back2XR 01 gmc 2500hd 6.0L, 121xxx miles, mobil-1 oil since new. I started the truck yesterdau after sitting for two weeks. Theres a loud rapping/tapping noise comming from the pass side upper part of the engine. Has good oil preasure. Any one had similiar problems or an idea before I "tear down". Your coolant is orange correct? Thats the root cause of your problem. It has eaten away the intake manifold gasket, which in turn is letting a small amount of coolant leak into your head, washing out the lifter.....the oil and water won't mix, and it taps, sometimes loud, sometimes not, longer one day shorter next day. Takes about 6 hours to fix, flush and swap to reg green antifreeze, problem solved. Or at least this is what I have seen roughly 10 times, including once on my old chevy. Common problem.

unless you got some hard facts and i do mean hard i'm calling complete bs on that post. Yes it is true that vortec motors mainly the pre lsx style had promblems with the intake gasket letting antifrezze in the cylinders and leaking out some. Cause was a plastic intake trying to seal to cast. BUt this orange anitfrezze green antifrezze talk alls i can say is i had a good laugh bout that one.

Besides the fact that we (family) owns a shop, and seeing it first hand, hard enough facts for me. So the plastic causes the gasket to "rot" and leak, I think not. Not to mention Chevy will admit it seems to be a problem (not that my cousin owns a local dealership or anything). The sealing between 2 items has nothing to do with what they are made of, it's the gasket, and if enough tq can be applied to seal it. Search around, make a few calls, decide for yourself.

chester I believe I do remember something about the ls7 lifter also now. I havent messed with em a whole lot since about 06ish when I left the world of mechanicing! lol wicked... I'm not trying to call b/s that may very well be possible, these ls style engines only have a simple cooling line that crosses over the top of the engine, the lifter valley on these are covered seperately from the intake. These engines don't use normal gaskets either, they use impregnated metal/o-ring style gaskets, on almost everything but the head gaskets and exhaust manifold gaskets.

Thanks for all the input. Let make a couple things clear. 1. Its not piston slap. Ive owned the truck for sometime, this noise is new, and loud. Its more like a knock. 2. I removed both valve covers over the weekend. The valve train works fine. All the rockers are tight, they all move the same when running, I held my finger down on the push rod side while its running, theyre all the same. 3. I removed the belt and started it to eliminate any external problem like waterpump.... the noise is still there. Its like a knocking noise, varies along with the rpms. The engine doesnt sputter or miss at all. The exhaust note sounds the same. My back is rocked so Im not able to pull the cross member and oil pan right now. Hopefully I will be more mobile in the next couple weeks.

Its looking like a bottom end job is in your future. When you get around to it pm theres a few tricks to these motors. If i was in your postion i would pull the motor. Also theres a few bolts you have to replace on these motors casue they are stretch to torque. You may get away with using them twice but its good insurance to do it rite the first time if funds permit.

Chester1, Have you ever seen a piston crack or the skirt break off on one of these. I just dont understand how a bearing can be good when I shut it off, the be knocking when I start it. There was no other noise than led up to this at all. I am 100% about that. Ive never seen a bearing do that.

ive seen it all. The pistons in these motors are pretty dang good they will take alot of egts. Same thing goes with the rods. Its been proven with studded rods stock ones can push the 1000hp mark. My bet would be a bearing. They wear over time and sometime it just takes that lil piece of trash or stress at the rite moment for it to start talking to you and letting you know its there. If the valve trian checked good then you may want to do a compression test on all cylinders that would rule out a whole in piston and or broken rings to a extent. I would just check all and compare them if you have on that is drastically lower then the others then thats sumthing to check into.

Chester, Wheres the best place to get parts for this thing? Seems to be real expensive. If it is in fact a rod bearing, Im looking at a pretty expensive rebuilt, and if theres more damage.... I found a used 02 6.0 out of a silverado locally for $1400 b.o. with 90k miles. I guess I need to tear this down asap and see what is needed and geta price list going. I will start with compression tests then just to rule that out. thanks

on a stock build i usually just get bearings and stuff like that from a local supplier and or threw the machine shop. Things can get pricey. You may look into swaping another motor in. 1400 is lil pricey i have seen them go for 500 but a genral price for 6.0 under 100k is bout 1000 with no drive accesories.

I can vouch that they won't take a +4* of timing tune and a 100 shot of nitrous!!!! lol I've got 2 ashtrays made out of the number 3 and 4 pistons of my original motor! just go ahead and call somebody and have em send you a 408 long block for about 10K and be done!!!

Ya right, did I mention that I only drive it around to do fire wood, or haul the quad around. She aint no racer and I dont want it to be. I want the cheapest but also reliable way out of this.

wickedhonda Besides the fact that we (family) owns a shop, and seeing it first hand, hard enough facts for me. Yes this post is complete bs. Especially when there is NO water that runs Through the intake!!!!!!!!!! Its a dry intake. Now back on the topic. my truck thas a piston slap as well mine being an 02 2500 hd with the 6.0. It more on the drivers side. As it warms up it goes away some.

You know I was thinking the same thing when I read that post. It almost made me go running through the woods screaming. lol. Heck I would'nt even worry about, as long as the motor is not misfireing the lifters are still doing there job. Chances are if you didn't have a rod knock when you parked the truck you don't have one now. The lifters in my 2000 have been tapping since it was new and that was in the neighborhood of 250k miles ago.

I wish I could tear it apart, but my back is real messed up right now, I hope to take a look soon though. So far all ive done is pull the valve covers off and check things out. The valve train works as it should. I aslo removed the belt to check accessories, not there. The noise is a KNOCK not a lifter tap. I hope to get you all an answer soon.
